Scale AI’s own careers page listed 191 open roles on September 30, 2026, mostly in public sector, enterprise and its Human Frontier Collective fellowships. That is a different door from Outlier, the contributor platform, which is still accepting new applicants for paid task work. Scale AI careers means picking the right door, not applying to both by accident.

What does Scale AI’s own careers page list today?
Most articles about “Scale AI careers” describe the contributor side, Outlier and the older Remotasks brand. We instead read Scale’s own corporate job board, its Greenhouse listing, on September 30, 2026, the day this article was verified. It carried 191 open requisitions. Some third party job aggregators show a higher count the same day by including reposted or expired listings; this article counts only what Scale’s own board returned.
Grouping all 191 postings by department shows where the hiring is actually concentrated.
| Function group | Open roles | Share of 191 | Typical titles |
|---|---|---|---|
| Public Sector | 44 | 23% | Software Engineer, Deployment Strategist, Engagement Manager, mostly Washington DC |
| Enterprise | 30 | 16% | Account Executive, Solutions Engineer, Forward Deployed Engineer |
| Gen AI | 22 | 12% | Product Manager, Operations Lead, Technical Program Manager |
| Global Public Sector (GPS) | 18 | 9% | Applied AI Engineer and Forward Deployed roles in London, Doha and Riyadh |
| Human Frontier Collective | 16 | 8% | Finance, Legal, ML, Medical, STEM and SWE Fellow |
| Applications Platform | 13 | 7% | Machine Learning Research Engineer, Software Engineer |
| Research | 11 | 6% | Research Scientist, ML Research Engineer, VP Research |
| Other corporate functions | 37 | 19% | Marketing, CFO Team, Legal & GRC, University, IT |
Two things stand out against the older story about Scale AI. First, public sector and government focused work (Public Sector plus GPS) makes up 32% of everything open today, consistent with our earlier reporting that Scale has leaned into defence and government contracts since its enterprise customers cooled. Second, Human Frontier Collective is not a side project: 16 open Fellow postings sit right on the corporate board alongside the salaried roles, which is worth its own section below.

How much do Scale AI’s direct roles pay?
122 of the 191 postings, 64%, display a base salary range in the listing itself. That is not Scale volunteering the number: California, New York, Washington and Colorado all require a posted pay band by law, and most of Scale’s open roles sit in one of those states. Roles in London, Doha and Riyadh carry no such requirement and none of them disclose a figure. Every band below is base salary only, as printed in the live listing on September 30, 2026; equity and bonus are mentioned in the postings but never quantified.
| Function group | Disclosed roles | Base salary band (USD) |
|---|---|---|
| Research | 11 of 11 | $165,600 to $496,000 |
| Applications Platform | 8 of 13 | $179,400 to $350,000 |
| Public Sector | 44 of 44 | $135,200 to $373,000 |
| Enterprise | 22 of 30 | $115,200 to $360,000 |
| Gen AI | 16 of 22 | $121,600 to $315,000 |
Read the width of those bands as a feature, not evasion: Scale’s own pay transparency text says the range covers several career levels for one posting, and a recruiter narrows it to your location and experience during the process. It is still more than most AI work advertising gives you. Compare it with the training platform ads that quote a flat “$50 an hour” with no domain, no level and no source attached; a listed, law mandated band beats a rate nobody involved has ever actually been paid.
What is the Human Frontier Collective Fellow role, and is it a job?
Not exactly, and the distinction matters. Scale’s own posting for a STEM Fellow, Human Frontier Collective states the role is a “1099 independent contractor” position, fully remote, with “an estimated duration of six months and the potential for extension.” Pay is not a number; the listing says only that “project pay rates vary across platforms and are depending on a number of factors, including but not limited to; projects, scope, skillset, and location.” The same posting requires a PhD, a postdoctoral researcher or a professor with STEM domain expertise, and states plainly that visa sponsorship is not available.
So a Human Frontier Collective Fellow sits on the same Greenhouse board as a salaried Public Sector engineer, uses the word “Fellow” instead of contractor in its title, and is nonetheless a project based, six month, 1099 engagement much closer in structure to Outlier or the other worker platforms Scale runs than to the roles in the table above. Our earlier reporting on Scale AI named Human Frontier Collective as one of three worker platforms without detailing this; the “Fellow” postings on the corporate board are that platform’s own recruiting channel for people with an advanced degree, not a second doorway into a W-2 job.
If a straightforward paid task queue interests you more than a six month fellowship or a corporate application, the free getAIwork work board lists what is open across platforms today, and the two minute match quiz narrows it to your own background.

Is Outlier still taking new contributors?
Yes, as of September 30, 2026. Outlier’s own FAQ carries no waitlist or closed language; it states plainly that Outlier “welcomes applications from qualified candidates.” Onboarding takes 30 to 90 minutes: create an account, pick your areas of expertise, complete skill screenings, then verify identity. Pay is described only as varying “by expertise, project complexity, and location,” shown before you start a project, and payouts run weekly on Tuesdays via PayPal, Airtm or ACH. That matches what our Outlier AI review found still true in August 2026, five weeks earlier.
Outlier and the corporate board answer different questions. Outlier is the open, no fixed salary, apply-today route into Scale’s data work; the roles in the tables above are the closed, credentialed, disclosed-salary route into Scale the company. A pending class settlement over past pay practices on Outlier and the older Remotasks platform, detailed in our review, is still working through final approval and is not a reason on its own to avoid either route. For the older Remotasks brand specifically, which now redirects rejected Outlier sign ups rather than accepting its own, see our separate check on whether Remotasks is still active.

Scale AI direct roles or Outlier: which one fits you?
These are testimony, not findings, and forum accounts skew toward people with something to complain about. We read dated posts about Scale’s corporate hiring process on Blind, the professional forum where tech workers post under a verified employer email. One candidate in October 2025 reported completing a software engineering phone screen, solving both parts and passing all test cases, then still being rejected with no explanation given. Two others, posting in January and April 2026 about Engineering Manager and Machine Learning Engineer loops, self-reported total compensation figures of roughly $295,000 and $450,000, and both said they had not been told the interview format in advance. A fourth, in August 2026, asked fellow candidates what a Public Sector hiring-manager round actually covers because Scale had not said. We could not verify any individual figure or outcome against a primary source; the pattern across five accounts is a process that pays well when it lands an offer and tells candidates relatively little about its own steps along the way.
| Scale AI direct role | Outlier | |
|---|---|---|
| Where you apply | Scale’s own Greenhouse board | outlier.ai directly |
| Employment type | Mostly salaried; Human Frontier Collective is 1099 | 1099, per project |
| Pay | Disclosed band on 122 of 191 postings, by law | Shown per project, not fixed |
| Typical process | Multi week: screen, technical rounds, virtual onsite | 30 to 90 minute onboarding plus skill screenings |
| Eligibility | Most require US work authorisation; no visa sponsorship on Fellow roles | Global, with country-based payout method |
Neither door is better in the abstract. A credentialed applicant with US work authorisation and the patience for a multi week loop has a shot at the salaried table in the second section; almost anyone can start Outlier’s onboarding this evening. Picking the wrong one wastes weeks. Snorkel AI has the same two doors, a salaried Greenhouse board and a US only expert contributor route, set out in our guide to Snorkel AI careers. The match quiz asks a few questions about your background and points you at whichever door, and whichever other platform on the free board, actually fits.

Frequently asked questions
Does Scale AI hire outside the United States?
Yes for some roles. Its Greenhouse board lists Global Public Sector openings in London, Doha and Riyadh and Human Frontier Collective Fellow roles open to the UK and Canada, though most Public Sector and Enterprise roles require US work authorisation with no visa sponsorship.
Do Scale AI’s Public Sector and GPS roles require a security clearance?
Some do. A handful of listings, including Solutions Engineer roles based in Washington DC, state a clearance requirement directly in the posting; most Public Sector roles do not mention one, so check each listing rather than assuming.
Is the Human Frontier Collective the same thing as Outlier?
No. Both are 1099 contributor programmes tied to Scale AI, but Human Frontier Collective Fellow roles require an advanced degree, run about six months and are posted on Scale’s own corporate job board, while Outlier is open enrolment, project based and applied for directly on outlier.ai.
Does applying to Outlier cost anything?
No. Outlier’s own FAQ describes account creation, expertise selection, skill screenings and identity verification as the onboarding steps, with no application or registration fee mentioned anywhere in that process.
Can Outlier contributors work from outside the United States?
Outlier pays through PayPal, Airtm or ACH depending on country, which points to contributors working from multiple countries, though eligibility and available projects can vary by location and are confirmed during onboarding, not before.
Does a Scale AI job listing’s disclosed salary include equity or bonus?
No. The base salary bands in Scale’s own postings cover salary only; the listings mention that eligible roles also receive equity subject to board approval and other benefits, but do not print a number for either.
