Type the phrase into a job site and you get every title with the word strategic in it, which at an AI lab mostly means a salesperson with a large quota. So we pulled every title containing strategy, strategic or strategist from three lab boards on 28 October 2026, read through their own feeds: <a href=\"https:\/\/job-boards.greenhouse.io\/anthropic\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Anthropic&#8217;s Greenhouse board<\/a> (681 postings), <a href=\"https:\/\/jobs.ashbyhq.com\/openai\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">OpenAI&#8217;s Ashby board<\/a> (800) and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/about\/careers\/applications\/jobs\/results?company=DeepMind\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Google Careers filtered to DeepMind<\/a> (133).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That gave 76 titles. The middle column is a data scientist, an engineer or a marketer who sits in a strategy team. The last column is the Strategic Account Executive, the Strategic Sourcing Manager and friends, where strategic means a big customer or a big supplier. Nine of Anthropic&#8217;s fifteen were Strategic Account Executives alone, which is a sales job wearing a strategy hat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"msq-tool msq-check\" data-id=\"ai-strategy-jobs-sort\" data-verb=\" checked\">\n<h3>Is this listing really a strategy job?<\/h3>\n<p>The sorting rule this page used, as a checklist for the posting you have open. Not one of the 32 core postings carries director, head or vice president. That looks like good news for anyone below director level, until you read the requirements. OpenAI&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/jobs.ashbyhq.com\/openai\/f93ed20a-4a1c-43b4-895f-0830cdac6737\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Strategic Finance Generalist<\/a> wants 8 or more years in management consulting, investment banking, private equity or buy side investing. Anthropic&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/job-boards.greenhouse.io\/anthropic\/jobs\/5427938008\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">GTM Strategy and Operations role for its forward deployed engineering team<\/a> wants 10 or more. The seven with no number include OpenAI&#8217;s three Asia strategy leads; the <a href=\"https:\/\/jobs.ashbyhq.com\/openai\/f76d120b-7d1b-4e80-aaf8-5d2c6b38a7ca\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Japan posting<\/a> asks instead for significant experience leading regional or international operations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For a market wide view, the recruiter <a href=\"https:\/\/axialsearch.com\/insights\/ai-strategy-jobs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Axial Search<\/a> reports on a page updated 20 October 2026 that it analysed 8,901 US AI strategy postings since January 2026, and that 49% of postings sit at Director level, with just 2% at junior individual contributor level. Search results still title the page as an analysis of 1,859 postings, an earlier and smaller sample; we could only read the current version. The two counts disagree on titles and agree on substance. Ranges are set by the employer, change without notice and say nothing about what any one applicant is offered. Eight of OpenAI&#8217;s strategy postings shared the same $234,000 to $260,000 band, which suggests a pay grade rather than eight separate negotiations. For comparison, Axial&#8217;s page gives an overall median of $208,000 for the postings it analysed. These are the employers&#8217; published ranges, not a forecast for anyone reading this. Our page on the <a href=\"https:\/\/getaiwork.com\/articles\/highest-paying-ai-jobs\/\">highest paying AI jobs<\/a> sets these against engineering and research ranges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"where-are-the-entry-points-below-director-level\">Where are the entry points below director level?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are three, and none of them is a certificate. The first is the short list of lab roles with a lower bar. Only two of the 32 stated a minimum under five years: Anthropic&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/job-boards.greenhouse.io\/anthropic\/jobs\/5386793008\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Deal Velocity role<\/a>, which prefers 3 or more years in deal desk, sales strategy or commercial operations, and the <a href=\"https:\/\/job-boards.greenhouse.io\/anthropic\/jobs\/5432995008\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Office of the CCO role<\/a>, which asks for 4 or more years in management consulting, strategy and operations or a chief of staff team. Both still want a few years somewhere rigorous first.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The second is the deployment strategist, a customer facing title that sits below director. On 28 October 2026 the free <a href=\"https:\/\/getaiwork.com\/board\/\">getAIwork board<\/a> held 1,743 live listings, the same total its <a href=\"https:\/\/getaiwork.com\/stats\">public stats file<\/a> shows for 27 October. 25 of those titles contain strategy or strategist, and 8 are deployment, implementation or transformation strategists at employers such as Databricks, Mistral and Fireworks. The <a href=\"https:\/\/getaiwork.com\/board\/job\/9074\">Databricks Deployment Strategist<\/a> listing is marked remote. Only one of the 8, an <a href=\"https:\/\/getaiwork.com\/board\/job\/9906\">AI Implementation Strategist<\/a> listed by Technical Source in the US, was screened as intermediate rather than advanced.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The third is a strategy title on a training platform. Five of the 25 board titles are micro1 Strategic Project Lead contracts, such as <a href=\"https:\/\/getaiwork.com\/board\/job\/6190\">this one<\/a>, listed at $80 to $90 an hour on 28 October 2026. They are remote project contracts for people with a field such as law, medicine or finance, not salaried strategy posts, and the hours end when the project does. We read about 40 comments across three Reddit threads from March to September 2026, through a read only fetcher. These are what people report, paraphrased, not verified facts and not what any employer pays.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/MBA\/comments\/1rhwg5r\/stop_putting_genai_strategy_on_your_resume_if\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">March 2026 r\/MBA thread<\/a>, a poster who said they screen resumes for a product opening complained that many MBA candidates had rebranded as AI strategy leaders, but when pushed on how they would deliver it, mostly described buying more software seats. The same post went on to praise one particular tool, so read it as an opinion with a sales angle. A commenter who said they work at an AI company added that students pitch themselves as AI leaders without having led anything.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/consulting\/comments\/1u769f6\/how_do_people_get_into_corporate_strategy_and\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">June 2026 r\/consulting thread<\/a> from someone with ten years in strategic communications asking how to move into corporate strategy, the replies were consistent: corporate strategy at large companies is usually filled from the big consulting firms or investment banks, strategy and operations is more open to other backgrounds, and several people said certifications would not help at that stage. One commenter who moved from consulting into corporate strategy said the job is heavy on analysis and slides, and that an experienced hire new to that work would struggle because they would not be brought in as a junior.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/consulting\/comments\/1wman6z\/young_consultants_are_jumping_ship_for_ai\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">September 2026 r\/consulting thread<\/a> about a news report that young consultants are leaving for AI start ups cut the other way. One commenter at an AI start up said they rarely work more than 40 hours and earn a higher base than in consulting; others asked what a new graduate actually does there. Put together, the accounts agree with the lab postings that the road runs through consulting, finance or operations first. Where they differ is the start ups, which the forum says are hiring younger people. Those start ups mostly do not post on the three boards we counted, so our count cannot confirm it either way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"can-you-get-an-ai-strategy-job-from-india-or-without-experie\">Can you get an AI strategy job from India or without experience?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not at the three labs, on the day we looked. None of the 32 core strategy postings was in India; the five outside the US were in Singapore, Seoul and Tokyo, and none was remote. None of the 25 strategy titles on the board was marked beginner either.
