You sign up at
app.dataannotation.tech/worker_signup
with a name, an email, a password and a phone number, you pick a track, and you take one assessment. There is no CV, no portfolio, no interview and no recruiter call. The vendor says this plainly on its trust page: “No recruiters. No interviews.”

The assessment is deliberately built to look like the work rather than like an exam. In the vendor’s words, it “gives you direct experience with project types you’ll work on after approval”, covering the same ground as live projects: “chatbot interaction to writing and editing to coding tasks”. That framing is the single most useful thing it publishes, and most applicants ignore it.

The company you would be contracting with, incidentally, is Surge Labs, Inc., a Delaware corporation named in the terms of use last updated July 14, 2026. That name appears nowhere on the marketing site or in the privacy notice, only inside the contract you click through on the way in. We go into that in our full DataAnnotation review.

Which track should you pick?

You choose before you see a single question, and you cannot change your mind afterwards without burning the one attempt for that track. So read this table before you open the form, not after.

Track

What the vendor says it requires

Typical assessment length

General

A bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience, plus strong writing, critical thinking, research and fact-checking

About an hour

Multilingual

Native fluency in a language beyond English

One to two hours

Coding

Programming experience in Python, JavaScript, HTML, C++, C# or SQL, plus the ability to solve LeetCode-style problems

One to two hours

STEM

A master’s or PhD in maths, physics, biology or chemistry, or a bachelor’s plus ten years of professional experience

One to two hours

Professional

Licensed credentials in law, finance or medicine

One to two hours

Every track also requires reliable internet, fluency in English, and what the vendor calls “self-motivation and ability to follow detailed instructions independently”. Note one live contradiction on the vendor’s own site: the FAQ gives a bachelor’s degree as the baseline for general work, while its role pages say “No degree required. We care about what you can do, not where you learned it.”

The honest advice is to pick the track where your judgment is best, not the one where the published rate is highest. A specialist track you scrape through does not help you if the work then goes to people who were obviously stronger, and you cannot go back and try the general one you would have aced.

What is the assessment actually marking?

Three things, named by the vendor: judgment under ambiguity, reasoning process quality, and systematic approach to complexity. It adds a fourth in passing, “consistency under variation”, which it defines as whether “your judgments reflect systematic reasoning or case-by-case reactions”.

The single clearest statement it makes is this one: “Our platform assessments don’t really test whether you can follow rules. They test whether you can apply principles to novel situations that guidelines don’t explicitly cover.”

The vendor’s own worked example is worth reproducing, because it is the whole exam in one paragraph. Suppose the rubric says to prefer responses with citations. The checkbox approach rates a response highly because it has citations. The judgment approach notices that the citations do not actually support the claims being made, and rates the response poorly, because citations that function as what the vendor calls “credibility theater” are worse than no citations, since they manufacture false confidence.

Read that example twice before you start. It is the difference between the people who pass and the people who do not, and it is published free on the vendor’s own blog. The rubric is the floor, not the answer key. You are being asked whether you can tell when following it produces a bad outcome.

The other thing being marked, on every track, is your written English. The role pages say it directly: “Clear written English: your explanations are the training signal.” Your rating is the small part. Your reason for it is the product.

Worth checking what else is open first.
The getAIwork board is free and public, screened by a human. Platforms that give you one go are telling you something about how much weight the result carries.

What happens after you submit?

You wait. The vendor says you will get an email “within a few days”, and explains the pace: “We review submissions for thoroughness and accuracy rather than speed.” If you pass, you get platform access, and the vendor places you in either a Generalist or an Expert track based on what you demonstrated. Further specialist assessments can unlock higher-paying work later.

Identity verification comes afterwards rather than before. It runs through Persona, needs a physical unexpired government photo ID front and back plus a selfie with head turns, and VPNs must be off. The vendor says there is no deadline on completing it.

If you hear nothing, the FAQ is candid about what that means: “If you haven’t heard from us or received any assignments, it likely means your application is still under review or hasn’t been accepted yet. We will contact you if your assessment passes our review and we have work that matches your skill sets.” And then, flatly: “Given the number of applications to DataAnnotation, we are unable to provide direct responses for every applicant.” Silence is a documented outcome here, not a glitch. We wrote about the experience of it in DataAnnotation no response.

Passing is also not the end of being assessed. The vendor keeps the standard live: “We maintain strict quality standards, so subpar or problematic contributions may result in loss of access to future projects.”

What nobody will tell you, including the vendor

We went through the entire site, the app subdomain and the terms of use. These things are simply not published anywhere, and any source that states them confidently is not getting them from DataAnnotation.

Sample questions. Not one example, prompt or screenshot exists on any vendor page.

The rubric, the scoring scale, the pass mark or the weighting. The vendor names what it measures and never says how it scores it.

The pass rate. The blog says most applicants fail. It gives no number, and neither should anyone else.

Feedback on failure, or any appeal. Neither exists in any document.

How many questions or tasks the assessment contains. Only a duration is published.

Whether your time is paid. The word used is “free”, which is about cost, not compensation. Assume unpaid.

Which countries are eligible. The only statement anywhere is “available in 50+ countries”, with no list.

Any minimum payout amount. Not stated on any page or in the contract.

One small detail that says a lot: on the homepage and every role page, the “How it works” section consists of three headings, “Apply”, “Qualify” and “Work & get paid”, with no text at all underneath any of them. The section explaining the process is literally empty. That is the general standard of disclosure you are working with.

Is it worth the evening?

The honest read. Yes, if you go in properly. The barrier is genuinely low, the assessment is a fair preview of the actual work, and the published preparation advice is unusually good for a company that publishes so little else. What it costs you is one clear-headed hour that you do not get back. Do not burn it while distracted, do not pick a track for its rate card, and do not walk in expecting an answer key. The assessment is asking a single question in a lot of different costumes: can you tell good reasoning from confident-sounding reasoning, and can you say why.

Before you commit, it is worth seeing what else is open. Our Outlier review covers the other big platform in this category, and the hiring-now list is refreshed weekly.

Browse 1,662 live AI listings, free, no signup
Screened, human-approved, filled ones deleted daily.
