Smith.ai Jobs: Who Can Apply and What the Posting Asks For

A woman wearing a headset works on a laptop at home while looking into smith ai jobs.

Smith.ai jobs are almost all one job: a remote virtual receptionist answering phones for small businesses. On 18 October 2026 the posting was open to US and Mexico candidates only, listed a $15 hourly starting rate in the US, and asked for 25 to 40 hours a week, a headset and a computer that is not a Chromebook.

Listen to this article, about 13 minutes. A synthetic voice reads the article and announces each section title as it begins; tables are read row by row and the questions at the end are left out.

A play button sits beside every section heading, and once you scroll past this player a bar at the bottom of the screen keeps the controls in reach. Tap or click any sentence to hear the reading start from there.

Think you already know this? Five questions, one minute.

Every answer is on this page. Answer from what you know now; the page fills in the rest.

  1. 1. On 18 October 2026, which Smith.ai frontline role said it was not currently hiring?

  2. 2. What does Smith.ai’s receptionist service page say its live agents handle?

  3. 3. Which computer does the Smith.ai application landing page rule out?

  4. 4. Which candidates does the Smith.ai receptionist page say the role is for?

  5. 5. What weekly hours did the Smith.ai receptionist posting list?

What jobs does Smith.ai actually hire for?

Smith.ai sells answering services to law firms, contractors and other small businesses, some of it handled by software and some by people. The people are the jobs. Its careers page offers two paths, Virtual Receptionist and Customer Engagement Representative, and on 18 October 2026 the second one carried the line that Smith.ai is not currently hiring for it. So in practice there is one door open, and it has a phone behind it.

There is a second, much smaller list. The corporate roles sit on a separate applicant board, which on 18 October 2026 showed exactly two openings, Manager of Client Success and Senior Product Marketing Manager, both remote and full time, neither printing a salary. If you searched smith ai jobs hoping for engineering work, that list is the whole answer today.

Is a Smith.ai job an AI job?

Not in the sense most people searching mean. Smith.ai’s receptionist service page says its 500+ North American agents handle 400,000+ calls per month, backed by AI quality systems. The AI is the product the company sells to businesses. The receptionist job is answering those businesses’ calls: taking messages, booking appointments, collecting payments and transferring callers. Nobody is labelling data or rating chatbot answers.

That is also why the job does not appear on our free, public work board. We crawled every card on 18 October 2026 and found 1,677 unique live listings, the same total our stats.json carried that morning, and none of them came from Smith.ai. The board screens for AI training, AI data and AI adjacent roles, and a call answering job at a company that also sells an AI receptionist is a phone job. A perfectly respectable one, but a phone job.

If what you actually want is work training AI models with no prior experience, our guide to AI training jobs that take beginners covers what is open, and the getAIwork match quiz points you at listings that fit your background.

What does the Smith.ai receptionist posting require?

Here is the part nobody else seems to have read. The requirements appear in two places, the Smith.ai receptionist page and the application landing page run by Criteria Corp, the assessment company the Apply button sends you to. They mostly agree. They do not agree on typing speed.

RequirementSmith.ai receptionist page, 18 October 2026Application landing page, 18 October 2026
Typing speedMinimum 40 wpmMinimum 34 WPM
ComputerPersonal desktop or laptop with Google ChromeSame, and Chromebooks are NOT compatible
Memory and screenMinimum 8GB RAM, 1024×768 displaySame
HeadsetA headset with a microphone armA USB headset with a microphone arm
InternetUnder 50 ms ping, over 10 Mbps down, over 3 Mbps upSame, and the connection must be private
Work authorisationAuthorised to work in the US if US based, and able to pass a background checkSame
SettingA quiet environment for answering callsSame

Two practical readings. First, practise to 40 words a minute, because that is the higher of the two numbers and the one on the employer’s own page. Second, if your only computer is a Chromebook, the landing page rules it out before the assessment starts. The page names the two tests it wants your connection checked on, Speedtest and Twilio’s network test, and both are free to run before you apply.

Who can apply for Smith.ai jobs, and from where?

The receptionist page says it plainly: for US and Mexico candidates only. That rules out readers in India, and it rules out everyone else the recruiting threads have heard from. In an April 2026 r/WFHJobs thread, the poster, who writes as part of Smith.ai’s hiring team, told people asking from Kenya, the Philippines and Latin America that there was nothing for them.

Inside the US it is narrower than the page suggests. A May 2026 post by the same account lists the role as open across most states except California, New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Washington, Hawaii, the Portland metro area and Chicago, and adds that Arizona, Maine, Rhode Island and Colorado are restricted for English only applicants while bilingual applicants stay eligible. Smith.ai’s own pages do not print any state list, so treat it as unverified: it comes from a Reddit account, not the employer’s site, and lists like this change.

It matters because of what one applicant reported in September 2026: an Arizona applicant wrote that they had already done the initial assessment before learning the English only role was restricted in their state, and that the application never said so. If you live in one of those states, the cheapest move is to email the address on the posting, hiring@smith.ai, before you spend an hour on tests.

Tick what is true for you. Each line restates the Smith.ai posting and application page as read on 18 October 2026; it predicts nothing about whether an application succeeds.

What pay and hours does Smith.ai list?

As listed on the Smith.ai receptionist page on 18 October 2026, US based agents start at $15 an hour, bilingual English and Spanish agents at $16 an hour, and Mexico based agents at $11 an hour. In the April 2026 Reddit thread the hiring account confirmed the Mexico figure is in US dollars. Rates change and nothing about future pay is guaranteed.

ItemAs listed by Smith.ai on 18 October 2026
US starting rate$15 an hour
US bilingual starting rate$16 an hour, fluent English and Spanish
Mexico starting rate$11 an hour
TrainingPaid, in both countries
HealthcareAvailable to US agents working 30 or more hours a week
Referral bonus$150 per employee referral
Hours25 to 40 a week, one Monday shift required
Shift blocks2 to 5 hours, set by business needs and your availability

The schedule is the part to read twice. The page says the service runs 24/7/365 and offers flexible hours, but also requires a Monday shift and at least 25 hours, scheduled in blocks that follow client demand. The May 2026 Reddit post describes the set weekly schedule as falling within company hours of 5am to 4pm Pacific, Monday to Sunday, which is a narrower window than 24/7 and is, again, the recruiter’s description rather than the page’s. Flexible, in other words, inside walls.

The April 2026 thread also describes the US role as a W2 employee position, full time or part time. For a sense of how this compares with other remote work that takes beginners, our roundup of remote AI jobs lists what each kind of listing asks for.

What do applicants report about the hiring process?

We read two r/WFHJobs threads posted by the same hiring account, one from April 2026 and one from May 2026, and their roughly 30 comments running to September 2026. These are what people report, not verified facts about the process.

The pattern is consistent. The hiring account describes the process as assessment based, with everyone sitting the same tests whatever their background, and says in May 2026 that it sees many people fail the English test and the typing test. The same account said in May 2026 that Smith.ai has hired people with no call handling experience, answering a former cashier who asked. Feedback is thin: the April reply says Smith.ai does not typically give specific feedback on failed assessments, though it offers to look if you email in.

Not every account is upbeat. In the April thread a reply from the hiring account thanks a commenter for feedback that the role is fast paced and that difficult callers are part of the job, and says it is not the right fit for everyone. One July 2026 commenter wrote that they had been rejected before and now did not get past the first form at all. The Arizona applicant above was annoyed, reasonably, at doing tests for a role their state was closed to. The May post also says the English section was shortened and some criteria adjusted, so earlier rejections are not necessarily final.

Where the accounts and the official page line up: English, typing and equipment decide most outcomes. Where they diverge: the page never mentions excluded states or a 5am to 4pm Pacific window. Before you start the tests, the getAIwork match quiz is a quick way to see what else suits someone without call centre experience.

How do you tell a real Smith.ai job offer from a fake one?

Smith.ai’s posting is unusually direct about this, and the wording is worth knowing. It says Smith.ai does not charge an application fee, never asks you to pay to work there, never asks for banking or financial information during the application, and never coordinates employment via social media. Scams are to be reported to hiring@smith.ai.

So a message on Telegram from someone hiring for Smith.ai, asking for a starter kit fee, is fake by the company’s own rules, however friendly the emoji. The real route is the Apply button on the receptionist page, which leads to the Criteria Corp assessment. The Reddit hiring posts above link to that same careers page, and that page is the one to use whoever sends you the offer. If you are weighing a different offer that looks too smooth, our check of whether JobPeak is legit walks through the same tests.

The eligibility check below restates the posting’s requirements; it does not predict whether an application will succeed. If Smith.ai is not open to you, the getAIwork board is free and public with no signup, and our guide to AI jobs with no experience covers the platforms that hire outside the US.
