Is the Generative AI Leader certification worth $99?
For a non-engineer at an organisation that uses or is adopting Google Cloud, yes, it is one of the better-value credentials available. It is priced at the low end, valid three years, and aimed squarely at people who need to make decisions about AI rather than build it. For an engineer, it is too shallow to signal much.
The honest framing: this exam certifies that you can hold a competent conversation about generative AI in a business context. That is a real and undersupplied skill, and it is also not the same as being able to ship anything. Product managers, analysts, consultants and technically-minded marketers get the most from it. Engineers should skip straight to the professional exam or spend the money elsewhere.

What is on the Professional Machine Learning Engineer exam?
Two hours, 50 to 60 multiple choice and multiple select questions, delivered online or at a test centre in English or Japanese. There are no formal prerequisites, but Google recommends three or more years of industry experience including at least one year building on Google Cloud. The exam was recently updated for the Gemini Enterprise Agent Platform.
The skills assessed are the unglamorous end of machine learning, which is exactly why the credential carries weight:

- Collaborating across teams to manage data and models, the part that sinks more projects than any algorithm
- Scaling prototypes into models that survive contact with production traffic

- Monitoring AI solutions after launch, which is where the interesting failures live
Note the platform change carefully. The exam moved from Vertex AI content toward the Gemini Enterprise Agent Platform, alongside updates to Google Cloud’s data and analytics stack. Any course or practice set written before that refresh is teaching a retired syllabus with total confidence, which is the most expensive kind of wrong.
Are Google’s Coursera certificates the same thing?
No, and the gap is bigger than the naming suggests. Google AI Essentials and Google Prompting Essentials are courses hosted on Coursera. You can audit much of the content, but earning the certificate requires a subscription listed around $49 per month, with Coursera Plus at $59 per month or $399 per year. Nobody proctors them and nobody fails.
That is not a criticism of the courses. Google AI Essentials is a genuinely decent introduction for someone whose job is about to involve AI tools and who has no idea where to start. It belongs on a resume under professional development, listed honestly. What it does not do is appear in a recruiter’s credential search alongside a proctored Google Cloud certification, because it is not one.

Match it to your role and to your employer’s cloud. Business roles at a Google Cloud organisation should take Generative AI Leader. Engineers with real Google Cloud experience should take Professional Machine Learning Engineer. Everyone else, including career changers with no cloud background, should start with free coursework and a built project rather than a $200 exam.
