What is Prolific and how is it different from AI training platforms?
Prolific is a participant panel. Researchers post studies, you take them, and you get paid per study at a rate that has to clear an enforced hourly floor. You are a research subject rather than a contractor grinding a task queue, and that difference shapes everything else about the platform, including its weaknesses.
It started in 2014 as an Oxford spinout serving academics, and the legal entity is still Prolific Academic Ltd, registered in London. What has changed, and what most reviews have not caught up with, is that Prolific’s commercial centre of gravity has moved to AI. Its own site now sells human feedback APIs, agentic evaluations, benchmarks and preference data to AI labs. The homepage no longer leads with academic research; it leads with real human data, ready in minutes.
Practically, that means Prolific sits in an odd middle ground. Compared with an AI training platform like the ones covered in our AI training platforms roundup, Prolific has no project onboarding, no unpaid guidelines marathon, and an actual enforced rate floor. Compared with those platforms, it also has no steady queue. Studies appear, and if you are not there, they are gone.
How much does Prolific pay, and is the minimum real?
Prolific’s researcher help centre states it plainly: We enforce a minimum hourly rate of £6 / $8, and recommend paying at least £9 / $12 per hour. Those thresholds were last updated in August 2025 and are restated on pages dated April and July 2026, so they are current. Enforcement is not theoretical either.
Participants can flag an underpaying study with a Report button. Researchers then have 22 days to pay rewards and correct underpayment, and accounts that do not comply can be suspended. That is a genuinely unusual amount of structure for crowd work, and it is the strongest single argument for the platform.
Two honest caveats. First, the posted hourly figure is derived from the study’s median completion time, so if you are careful and slow, your effective rate is lower than the headline. Second, none of that floor applies to the time you spend refreshing the dashboard waiting for a study to appear, and for most people that is the larger number.

How do you actually get onto Prolific?
You sign up, you probably join a waitlist, and this is where the article earns its keep. Prolific published the funnel in its own 2025 review: only 13% of people are invited off the waitlist, and only 55% of people invited off the waitlist pass onboarding. Multiply those and roughly seven signups in a hundred become active participants.
We have not seen that pair of numbers in a single review of this platform, which is odd, because they reframe the entire question. Every guide treats joining Prolific as a how-to. On the company’s own figures it is closer to a lottery with a homework round attached.
The requirements themselves are straightforward. You must be over 18 and living in an eligible country, which Prolific describes as most OECD countries plus a growing list of others including India, Indonesia, Egypt, Brazil, Mexico, South Africa, Taiwan and several Gulf states. Note that Prolific’s own marketing FAQ and its help centre currently disagree about whether Lithuania is eligible. The help centre list is the one to trust, and either way check it on the day rather than trusting any article, including this one.
Verification runs through Onfido and needs a photo ID issued by your country of residence, a real mobile number registered in that country, and a selfie. VOIP numbers and landlines are rejected. Prolific says its checks now run to over 110 verification checks, with periodic re-verification and periodic video selfie checks after that. Whatever you make of that, it is a long way from the sign-up-and-start-earning framing you will read elsewhere.
What are Prolific AI taskers, and can you become one?
Prolific now runs a separate tier called AI taskers: participants with proven skills in AI evaluation and training tasks. Its own help pages describe the work as reviewing model outputs for accuracy and relevance, fact-checking AI-generated information, and giving detailed feedback.
You do not apply. Prolific selects on high approval rates and strong performance on past studies, then invites you to an AI Task Assessment, described as a test in two parts designed to simulate real AI studies. The final exam takes around 60 minutes. Failing it does not affect your account. On pay, Prolific says the base rate is the same as other studies, but that because the tasks are more complex, they typically carry higher rewards. It does not publish a figure, so neither will we.
This is the closest thing Prolific has to the qualification process used across the wider category, which we cover in RLHF jobs and AI rater jobs. The difference is the direction of travel: elsewhere you sit an exam to get in, here you get in and then earn the exam.
How does Prolific pay you?
PayPal, in cash, in GBP or USD. Every current help page describes PayPal as the payout method; older reviews mentioning Circle or bank transfer are describing something Prolific no longer documents. You can cash out when your combined approved balance across both currencies reaches £6 or $6, mixed currencies counted together, and Prolific states the money arrives within 24 hours and usually sooner.
Two mechanics people get caught by. Until you have made four cashouts, you must wait 72 hours between them rather than 24. And balances marked waiting for approval do not count towards the threshold, though anything not reviewed within 22 days is auto-approved and paid. Prolific charges no cashout fee of its own. If you live outside the UK or US, PayPal’s conversion charges are yours to absorb, and on a £6 withdrawal they hurt.
Will you get rejected or banned?
Far less often than the internet suggests. Prolific states that 0.5% of participant responses were rejected in 2025. The grounds are published: finishing far faster than expected, failing attention checks, deliberately low-effort answers, missing essential answers, and failing an authenticity check, which means AI-generated or copied text.
The attention-check policy is unusually participant-friendly and worth knowing. On any study lasting five minutes or more, Prolific’s own policy says participants must fail at least two checks to be rejected. Only studies under five minutes may reject on a single check. And speed alone cannot be used to reject you except for exceptionally fast submissions.
One thing you genuinely should not do: use ChatGPT to write your free-text answers. Prolific says its authenticity checks detect LLM-written responses at 98.7% precision and flagged just under 1% of participants in a September 2025 audit. That is a fast route off the platform.
A quieter finding, from a help page dated August 2026: Prolific deliberately throttles heavy users. Its own wording is that if you have completed a lot of studies recently, you may see fewer invitations for a short time, because it works to keep study distribution fair. Most maximise-your-earnings advice about this platform is written as though grinding harder produces more studies. Prolific says the opposite.
What can you realistically expect to make?
We will not put a number on it, because nobody honestly can and the ones you see quoted are somebody’s dashboard on a good week. What we can describe is the shape of the constraint.
Prolific says it has over 300,000 verified participants and more than a million people on the waitlist. That is the whole story in one sentence: worker supply massively exceeds study demand. The dominant complaint in participant communities is not that Prolific fails to pay. It is that there were not enough studies this week. Those are worker reports rather than company statements, but they are consistent, and they are exactly what you would predict from the ratio.
