AI Strategy Jobs: Who Is Hiring Below Director Level

AI strategy jobs below director level do exist, but they are rarely junior. On 28 October 2026 the OpenAI, Anthropic and Google DeepMind boards listed 32 strategy postings and not one was titled director, yet 23 of the 25 that state a minimum asked for five or more years in consulting, finance or operations.

On this page: all 76 strategy titled postings on the OpenAI, Anthropic and Google DeepMind boards on 28 October 2026, sorted into the 32 that are strategy jobs, a table of the experience each asks for, pay only as listed, and what about 40 forum comments report.

Think you already know this? Five questions, one minute.

Every answer is on this page. Answer from what you know now; the page fills in the rest.

  1. 1. Of Anthropic’s 34 strategy titled postings on 28 October 2026, what were nine of them?

  2. 2. Of the 25 core lab strategy postings that state a minimum, how many asked for five or more years?

  3. 3. What base range did OpenAI’s Pricing Strategist posting list on 28 October 2026?

  4. 4. How many years does Anthropic’s Strategy and Operations role in the Office of the CCO ask for?

  5. 5. How many of the 32 core lab strategy postings were based in India on 28 October 2026?

What counts as an AI strategy job?

Fewer things than the search results suggest. Type the phrase into a job site and you get every title with the word strategic in it, which at an AI lab mostly means a salesperson with a large quota. So we pulled every title containing strategy, strategic or strategist from three lab boards on 28 October 2026, read through their own feeds: Anthropic’s Greenhouse board (681 postings), OpenAI’s Ashby board (800) and Google Careers filtered to DeepMind (133).

That gave 76 titles. We then sorted each one by what the job is, not by the word in it.

OpenAI1671538

The first column is the subject of this page: Strategy and Operations, Finance and Strategy, Strategic Finance, Pricing Strategist and strategic planning roles, whose duties are deciding where the company spends money and effort. The middle column is a data scientist, an engineer or a marketer who sits in a strategy team. The last column is the Strategic Account Executive, the Strategic Sourcing Manager and friends, where strategic means a big customer or a big supplier. Nine of Anthropic’s fifteen were Strategic Account Executives alone, which is a sales job wearing a strategy hat.

Is this listing really a strategy job?

The sorting rule this page used, as a checklist for the posting you have open. It restates the tables above and says nothing about your chances.

How senior are AI strategy jobs at the big labs?

Here the titles mislead in the other direction. Not one of the 32 core postings carries director, head or vice president. That looks like good news for anyone below director level, until you read the requirements. Each Anthropic posting says the years required will correlate with the internal job level requirements for the position, which is a polite way of saying the level is hidden and the years tell you what it is.

Minimum experience statedAnthropicOpenAIDeepMindTotal
Under 5 years2002
5 to 7 years6219
8 to 10 or more years58114
No number stated1607
Total1416232

So 23 of the 25 postings that name a number ask for at least five years, and 14 ask for eight or more. OpenAI’s Strategic Finance Generalist wants 8 or more years in management consulting, investment banking, private equity or buy side investing. Anthropic’s GTM Strategy and Operations role for its forward deployed engineering team wants 10 or more. The seven with no number include OpenAI’s three Asia strategy leads; the Japan posting asks instead for significant experience leading regional or international operations.

For a market wide view, the recruiter Axial Search reports on a page updated 20 October 2026 that it analysed 8,901 US AI strategy postings since January 2026, and that 49% of postings sit at Director level, with just 2% at junior individual contributor level. Search results still title the page as an analysis of 1,859 postings, an earlier and smaller sample; we could only read the current version. The two counts disagree on titles and agree on substance. The wider market labels its strategy hires director; the labs give them flat titles and ask for the same decade.

Bar chart of minimum experience asked by 32 ai strategy jobs on three lab boards
Minimum experience stated in the 32 strategy postings on the OpenAI, Anthropic and Google DeepMind boards on 28 October 2026: 2 under five years, 9 at five to seven, 14 at eight or more, and 7 with no number. None was titled director.

What do AI strategy jobs at the labs pay, as listed?

Every figure below is the base range printed in the posting on 28 October 2026, for a US office. Ranges are set by the employer, change without notice and say nothing about what any one applicant is offered. DeepMind’s postings on Google Careers did not show a range in the text we read.

PostingMinimum statedListed base range, 28 October 2026
Anthropic, Finance and Strategy, Deal Velocity3 years, preferred$190,000 to $240,000 a year
Anthropic, Strategy and Operations, Office of the CCO4 years$190,000 to $270,000 a year
Anthropic, Finance and Strategy, Compute7 years$240,000 to $325,000 a year
OpenAI, Pricing Strategist6 years$234,000 to $260,000 a year
OpenAI, Strategic Finance Generalist8 years$234,000 to $260,000 a year
OpenAI, Strategy and Operations Lead, Creative Partnerships10 years$333,000 to $370,000 a year

Across the 25 US lab postings that printed a range, the lowest floor was $190,000 and the highest ceiling $370,000, as listed. Eight of OpenAI’s strategy postings shared the same $234,000 to $260,000 band, which suggests a pay grade rather than eight separate negotiations. For comparison, Axial’s page gives an overall median of $208,000 for the postings it analysed. These are the employers’ published ranges, not a forecast for anyone reading this. Our page on the highest paying AI jobs sets these against engineering and research ranges.

Where are the entry points below director level?

There are three, and none of them is a certificate. The first is the short list of lab roles with a lower bar. Only two of the 32 stated a minimum under five years: Anthropic’s Deal Velocity role, which prefers 3 or more years in deal desk, sales strategy or commercial operations, and the Office of the CCO role, which asks for 4 or more years in management consulting, strategy and operations or a chief of staff team. Both still want a few years somewhere rigorous first.

The second is the deployment strategist, a customer facing title that sits below director. On 28 October 2026 the free getAIwork board held 1,743 live listings, the same total its public stats file shows for 27 October. 25 of those titles contain strategy or strategist, and 8 are deployment, implementation or transformation strategists at employers such as Databricks, Mistral and Fireworks. The Databricks Deployment Strategist listing is marked remote. Only one of the 8, an AI Implementation Strategist listed by Technical Source in the US, was screened as intermediate rather than advanced.

The third is a strategy title on a training platform. Five of the 25 board titles are micro1 Strategic Project Lead contracts, such as this one, listed at $80 to $90 an hour on 28 October 2026. They are remote project contracts for people with a field such as law, medicine or finance, not salaried strategy posts, and the hours end when the project does. If you are unsure which of these routes suits your background, the two minute match quiz points you at one before you write a cover letter.

The lab postings ask for years of consulting, finance or operations work, not a certificate.

Beside these, AI consultant jobs and AI product manager jobs are the usual neighbouring doors for people coming from consulting and operations, and each has its own count.

What do people trying to move into strategy roles report?

The labs do not publish their hiring outcomes, so we read what people say in public. We read about 40 comments across three Reddit threads from March to September 2026, through a read only fetcher. These are what people report, paraphrased, not verified facts and not what any employer pays.

In a March 2026 r/MBA thread, a poster who said they screen resumes for a product opening complained that many MBA candidates had rebranded as AI strategy leaders, but when pushed on how they would deliver it, mostly described buying more software seats. The same post went on to praise one particular tool, so read it as an opinion with a sales angle. A commenter who said they work at an AI company added that students pitch themselves as AI leaders without having led anything.

In a June 2026 r/consulting thread from someone with ten years in strategic communications asking how to move into corporate strategy, the replies were consistent: corporate strategy at large companies is usually filled from the big consulting firms or investment banks, strategy and operations is more open to other backgrounds, and several people said certifications would not help at that stage. One commenter who moved from consulting into corporate strategy said the job is heavy on analysis and slides, and that an experienced hire new to that work would struggle because they would not be brought in as a junior.

A September 2026 r/consulting thread about a news report that young consultants are leaving for AI start ups cut the other way. One commenter at an AI start up said they rarely work more than 40 hours and earn a higher base than in consulting; others asked what a new graduate actually does there. Put together, the accounts agree with the lab postings that the road runs through consulting, finance or operations first. Where they differ is the start ups, which the forum says are hiring younger people. Those start ups mostly do not post on the three boards we counted, so our count cannot confirm it either way.

Can you get an AI strategy job from India or without experience?

Not at the three labs, on the day we looked. None of the 32 core strategy postings was in India; the five outside the US were in Singapore, Seoul and Tokyo, and none was remote. None of the 25 strategy titles on the board was marked beginner either. Be wary of the course that sells an AI strategy certificate for this reason: not one of the 32 lab postings asked for one, and the requirements all named years of work.

None of the 32 lab strategy postings counted on 28 October 2026 was based in India.

The realistic route for someone without that background is a neighbouring role that builds it, such as operations, a deal desk or a training contract in your own field, which our guide to AI jobs with no experience covers. Every listing counted here can be read for free on the getAIwork work board, which is public with no signup and shows pay only as each source posts it. If you want a pointer first, the match quiz compares the routes against your background.

Frequently asked questions

Is a Strategic Account Executive an AI strategy job?

No. It is a sales role covering large customers. On 28 October 2026 Anthropic listed nine Strategic Account Executive postings, which we counted as sales, not strategy.

What is a strategy and operations role at an AI company?

It is an internal role that plans how a team spends money and effort and then runs the process. OpenAI and Anthropic both use the title, usually attached to a sales, support or partnerships team.

Does DeepMind hire for strategy roles?

A little. Of 133 DeepMind postings on Google Careers on 28 October 2026, two were strategy roles: a Strategic Planning Manager asking for 5 years of program management and a strategy lead asking for 10 years.

Are AI strategy jobs remote?

Not at the labs we counted: all 32 named an office in the US or Asia. On the getAIwork board some deployment strategist listings, such as one at Databricks, were marked remote on 28 October 2026.

What is a deployment strategist?

It is a customer facing role that works out how a client should use an AI product and then helps put it in place. Eight such strategist titles were on the getAIwork board on 28 October 2026.

Do I need an MBA for an AI strategy job?

None of the 32 lab postings we read required one. Anthropic’s compute finance role mentions an MBA or other advanced degree, and most postings ask for years in consulting, finance or operations instead.
