AI consultant jobs are mostly salaried, senior roles at consulting firms, not a side gig. On 15 October 2026 Capgemini’s job feed carried 106 AI consultant titles and Accenture’s search surfaced 245, while our board’s 47 consultant titled listings split into 35 employed roles, 11 AI training expert gigs, one contract and no course adverts.

What does an AI consultant job actually mean on a posting?
Three different things, which is the whole problem with the title. We crawled our own free, public work board on 15 October 2026, when its stats.json showed 1,733 live listings, and pulled every title containing the word consultant. There were 54. Seven were the same job posted twice, which left 47 distinct listings.
Thirty five were ordinary employed jobs: an AI Consultant at Reed Technology in the UK, AI Strategy and AI Governance consultants at a German firm, a Data and AI Consultant in the Netherlands. Thirty three of those were genuine AI or data consulting roles; the other two were a clinical quality consultant and a sales role that happened to sit at AI companies. Eleven were something else entirely: AI training work on expert platforms, where a Mercor or micro1 listing borrows the consultant title because it wants people who have done consulting. One was a freelance contract. None was a course.
That last zero matters, because the consultant title has become the artisanal sourdough of job adverts: it sounds premium and anyone can put it on the label. The adverts that sell you a course called AI Consultant Accelerator never reached the board. They live on social feeds, and the section on spotting them is further down.
| Consultant titled listings on the getAIwork board, 15 October 2026 | Count | What the work is |
|---|---|---|
| Employed AI or data consulting roles | 33 | Salaried, office or hybrid, mostly UK, Germany, Switzerland and the Netherlands |
| Employed roles with consultant in the title, not AI consulting | 2 | A clinical quality role and a sales role at AI companies |
| AI training expert roles on platforms | 11 | Mercor, micro1 and one other, grading and building AI training tasks |
| Freelance contract | 1 | A London AI adoption contract on a day rate |
| Course sale adverts | 0 | None on the board that day |

How many AI consultant jobs do Accenture and Capgemini list?
More than the board, because the big firms post on their own systems. Capgemini’s careers feed held 6,602 open postings on 15 October 2026. Titles containing consultant made up 951 of them, and 106 of those also named AI, generative AI, agentic AI or machine learning. The UK carried 32, the US 19, Germany 16 and France 13. India carried one, so this feed is a poor guide to Capgemini’s hiring in India.
Accenture tilts the other way. Its Workday careers board caps any search at 2,000 results, so we read all 2,000 for AI consultant on 15 October 2026 and counted 245 titles that carried both words. That is a floor, not a total. Of the 245, 147 were in Indian cities, led by Bengaluru and Gurugram, and seven were in the US. Accenture’s titles read like grades, so a title such as Data and AI Consultant there is a level on a ladder, not a freelancer.
One detail repays a look: 140 of those 245 Accenture postings showed Posted 30+ Days Ago, and one Bengaluru Data and AI Consultant posting was dated 30 October 2025. An old posting is not proof the seat is filled, but it is a reason to apply widely rather than wait on one requisition.
What do AI consultant jobs ask for and pay, as listed?
Years of experience, first and always. The Accenture Commerce AI Consultant posting in Bengaluru, dated 8 June 2026, asks for a minimum of 5 to 7 years in SEO, digital marketing, content strategy or digital commerce, and calls prior consulting experience an advantage. Of Capgemini’s 106 AI consultant titles, 70 were pitched at a senior, managing, principal, director or experienced level. Only four were for students, interns or graduates, such as a Capgemini graduate management consultant role in Data and AI in Stockholm.
Pay, written plainly, because these are the figures people search for. US postings print ranges under state pay transparency laws. The Accenture Finance AI Value Strategy Consultant posting, dated 28 September 2026, lists $59,100 to $177,800 a year for Illinois and $66,300 to $205,800 for New York, as listed. Its Consulting Manager posting for technology and AI native companies lists $94,400 to $293,800 for California, as listed. These are ranges for a grade across many cities, not offers, and rates change.
| Posting, read 15 October 2026 | Type | Pay as listed | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Accenture Finance AI Value Strategy Consultant, Chicago | Employed | $59,100 to $177,800 a year, Illinois range | Accenture posting |
| Accenture Consulting Manager, AI native companies, San Francisco | Employed | $94,400 to $293,800 a year, California range | Accenture posting |
| Reed Technology AI Consultant, UK | Employed | GBP 60,000 a year | board listing |
| Mercor Consulting Expert, German | AI training platform | $65 an hour, about 21 hours a week | board listing |
| Mercor Management Consulting Expert | AI training platform | $90 to $120 an hour | board listing |
| micro1 Consulting Specialist | AI training platform | $150 to $350 an hour | board listing |
| Project Blackbook AI Adoption Consultant, London | Freelance contract | GBP 300 to 650 a day, 3 to 6 months | board listing |
Every figure in that table is as listed by the source on the day we read it. Platform rates are set per project and nothing about them is guaranteed. For the wider picture, our breakdown of the highest paying AI jobs applies the same as listed rule across every field.
Are there remote or freelance AI consultant jobs?
Remote, yes, but almost only on the platform side. Of the 35 employed consultant roles on the board on 15 October 2026, none was remote. Nine of the 11 AI training expert roles were. That split is the honest answer to anyone hoping to be an AI consultant from a laptop at the kitchen table next month.

What the remote listings ask for is consulting experience, applied to AI training. The Mercor Consulting Expert listing for German speakers wants experienced management and strategy consultants to build realistic consulting scenarios, write prompts and set grading criteria, for about 21 hours a week. micro1’s Consulting Specialist work, per our board summary, is slide reconstruction and presentation design. You are teaching a model what good consulting looks like, not advising a client. Our Mercor review covers how that platform’s projects start and stop.
Freelance advisory work in the classic sense, a client paying you to fix their AI rollout, barely shows up as listings at all. The one contract on the board was a London day rate role through an agency, and it asked for senior consultant to senior manager experience. Our guide to AI freelancing covers how independent work is actually found. If you are unsure which of these three shapes fits you, the two minute match quiz sorts it before you rewrite a CV.
What do people chasing AI consulting work report?
We read four Reddit threads, from October 2025 to July 2026, with about 20 substantive replies between them. What follows is what people report, paraphrased, and none of it is evidence of what any platform pays.
In a r/mercor_ai thread from October 2025 asking whether anyone was actually hired as a legal expert, the answers split. One person said a contract arrived quickly and was paused before the first task. Another said they passed a paid trial and then heard nothing. Others said they were still on a project or on a third contract, and one said they applied to at least ten projects before landing one. The shared verdict was that it is real and very selective.
In a July 2026 thread about an email from a recruiting firm offering a Mercor interview, an account flaired as Mercor staff replied that its interviews happen at work.mercor.com and that it does not partner with recruiting firms for expert roles. That is a reported statement on a forum, not a policy page, but it is a useful check.
On r/sidehustle, a December 2025 thread from someone who tried a dozen AI side hustles said the start an AI agency advice had flooded the market, and the top reply observed that most people in the space seem to be selling courses. One commenter who helps local professionals use AI said it was slow for the first couple of months. A March 2026 post on expert networks, hour long calls with investors, described the work as real but very sporadic.
The accounts agree with the postings on the main point: paid consulting work, salaried or platform, goes to people with years in a field. They add what no posting says, that the platform route is stop and start.
How do you tell an AI consultant job from a course advert?
Look at who pays whom. A job pays you; a course advert asks you to pay first. The FTC’s Operation AI Comply announcement of 25 September 2024 described cases against schemes that, the agency alleged, promised AI powered income through costly training and done for you stores. Those were allegations in lawsuits, not findings, but the pattern is the one to watch. The table below sets the three shapes side by side.
| Check | Employed consultant posting | AI training expert listing | Course advert using the title |
|---|---|---|---|
| Who pays | The employer pays you a salary | The platform pays you per hour or task | You pay for the programme |
| Employer named | Yes, with a requisition number | Yes, the platform | Often only a personal brand |
| Location | A city or a set of offices | Usually remote, sometimes country limited | Anywhere, start today |
| Experience asked | Years in a field, often 5 or more | Years of consulting or a domain | None needed |
| Pay shown | A range by state or a salary | An hourly rate, as listed | An income figure or a promise |
| Where you apply | The firm’s own careers site | The platform’s own site | A call booking link or a chat app |
Our wider guide to AI jobs and the piece on AI generalist jobs use the same test. And the Telegram recruiter offering you an AI consultant role at OpenAI after a chat only interview is not OpenAI hiring.

Is this AI consultant advert really a course?
Tick each line that is true of the advert in front of you. Each one restates the course advert column of the article’s table.
Any ticked line is a reason to check the firm’s own careers site before going further. This list sorts adverts; it says nothing about what any job pays.
Which kind of AI consultant job fits your background?
It comes down to what you can show today. The table restates the postings above, read on 15 October 2026.
| Your background | The kind of role that fits | What the postings say | Where to look |
|---|---|---|---|
| Five or more years in consulting, data or a business function | Employed AI consultant at a firm | Accenture and Capgemini ask for years and seniority | Accenture careers, Capgemini careers |
| Management consulting experience, want remote hours | AI training expert role | Mercor and micro1 list hourly rates, project based | the board |
| A student or recent graduate | Graduate consulting programme | Four of Capgemini’s 106 were for students, interns or graduates | Capgemini graduate role |
| Senior and independent | Freelance contract through an agency | One day rate contract on the board that day | our freelancing guide |
| No experience yet | Not a consultant role yet | Every posting we read asked for experience | generalist roles |
Before you pay anyone for a consultant title, take the match quiz to see which kinds of AI work fit your background, and browse the work board, which is free and public with no signup, to see real listings from screened sources yourself.
Frequently asked questions
Do you need a degree for an AI consultant job?

Can I become an AI consultant with no experience?
Not through any posting we read on 15 October 2026. Every employed and platform listing asked for years in consulting or a field. A course that promises the title without experience is selling the course.
Are Mercor consulting expert roles real jobs?
They are real paid listings for AI training work, as listed on Mercor’s own site, but they are project based contracts. Reddit users in 2025 and 2026 report contracts that start, pause and restart.

Is the getAIwork board free?
Yes. The board at getaiwork.com/board/ is free and public, with no signup. It carried 1,733 live listings on 15 October 2026, 47 of them distinct consultant titled roles.
