The front door moved and nobody announced it
If you have looked for Appen contributor work in the last few years you know connect.appen.com. It is the URL in every listicle, every Reddit comment and every YouTube walkthrough about getting started with Appen. On September 24, 2026 it returns this:
503 Service Temporarily Unavailable
We checked three times with a browser user agent, and the login and public home paths behave the same. The response headers name an AWS load balancer, which means this is Appen’s own origin failing rather than a bot block aimed at us. There is no redirect to anywhere, no status page, and no notice on appen.com about it.
Meanwhile, appen.com/careers has quietly changed where it points contributors. Its navigation and footer both carry “Join our workforce” linking to crowdgen.com, and that is the only crowdgen link on the page. CrowdGen’s own signup app is self-identifying about the lineage: the page title is “CrowdGen by Appen” and the meta description reads, word for word, “Contributor Experience developed by Appen Connect”.

What is actually open right now?
Appen publishes its postings through a public feed, and the dates on it are the useful part. On September 24, 2026 it carried 32 live postings. The newest six went up on September 16, 2026, all Latin American Spanish voice recording projects. The oldest is a Burmese social media evaluator posting from February 20, 2025, still live nineteen months later, which is its own small finding about how these language pools work.
| Month posted | Postings |
|---|---|
| February 2025 | 1 |
| February 2026 | 1 |
| May 2026 | 1 |
| June 2026 | 9 |
| July 2026 | 5 |
| August 2026 | 8 |
| September 2026 (to the 24th) | 7 |
Appen public job feed, counted September 24, 2026. This is a board that is getting busier, not quieter.
Countries represented across those 32 postings: Argentina, Bahrain, Central African Republic, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Croatia, Czech Republic, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Denmark, Djibouti, Georgia, Greece, Japan, Laos, Malaysia, Mexico, Myanmar, Peru, Poland, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Sweden, Taiwan, United Arab Emirates and the United States, plus one posting open to any location. The work is voice and speech recording, speech evaluation, translation, social media evaluation and general annotation.
One number stands out more than any of those. Every single one of the 32 postings is an independent contractor, project-based role in a department called “AI Trainers – Domain Experts”. There are zero salaried or corporate roles on Appen’s public job board. Set that beside the 798 full-time employees and the $10 million cost reduction programme in its FY25 annual report, and the picture is a company hiring crowd and not hiring staff.
What does Appen pay?
CrowdGen’s homepage says “$100+/hr”, with an asterisk reading “Pay rate is based on location and skills”. Here is what Appen published on its own job postings during the same period, quoted as listed:
| Rate, as listed | Project | Posted |
|---|---|---|
| $40 per valid hour | Native Japanese Kansai dialect speakers | August 31, 2026 |
| $25 USD per valid hour | Japanese to Thai translation | February 2, 2026 |
| $0.05 per sentence, “up to $12.50 USD for the entire session (1hr)” | Lao voice recording | May 13, 2026 |
| $0.070 USD per unit, “earn up to $10.5/hour” | Vietnamese speech data validator | July 8, 2026 |
| $0.030 USD per completed unit | Six Latin American Spanish voice recording projects | September 16, 2026 |
Rates as listed by Appen on its own postings. 26 of 32 postings contain pay-related language; 10 carry an explicit dollar figure. None of this is a promise of earnings.
Two of Appen’s own phrases are worth sitting with. “Valid hour” and “completed unit” both mean the same thing in practice: you are paid for output the client accepts, not for time at the desk. Time spent on guidelines, on rejected work, and on tasks that turn out to be harder than the rate assumed is yours. That is standard across this whole category and it is the single biggest gap between a headline hourly rate and what lands in your account.
Appen does publish one commitment that its competitors mostly do not. Its FY25 annual report states: “We maintain a minimum wage commitment to ensure that all contributors are paid at least the local minimum wage equivalent.” The same report discloses that crowd expenses were 59.7 percent of revenue, so roughly sixty cents of every dollar Appen bills goes to contributors.
Payment mechanics, as published
- Processor: a payout aggregator called Dots, offering PayPal, local bank transfer, Airtm, SWIFT, Payoneer and gift card
- Schedule: monthly, “typically in by the 14th of the following month”, covering the previous month’s earnings. Reconciliation completes in the first week of the month
- Method changes are locked between the 6th and the 15th of each month
- Fees: CrowdGen publishes an itemised table. In the US, domestic ACH and US PayPal are free for one payment a month. Outside the US, PayPal is 2 percent capped at $20, Airtm is 2.15 percent plus Airtm fees, Payoneer is $0.75 plus Payoneer fees
- Threshold: no number published. CrowdGen holds payments smaller than the fee they would incur and rolls them into a later month
That monthly cycle is worth comparing. Clickworker runs a weekly bill run. Outlier pays weekly on Tuesdays. Prolific pays on demand. Appen pays monthly by the 14th. If cash flow matters to you, that is a real difference and it is published.

What Appen’s own numbers say about how long this lasts
You are deciding whether to invest unpaid hours in a vendor’s onboarding, so the vendor’s own financial disclosures are relevant, and Appen is a listed company that has to make them.
| Measure | FY25 | FY24 |
|---|---|---|
| Group revenue and other income | $233.4m | $235.7m |
| Statutory net loss after tax | minus $21.8m | minus $20.0m |
| Appen Global segment | $127.9m, down 21.1% | $162.0m |
| Appen China segment | $102.9m, up 74.8% | $58.9m |
| Dividend | Nil | Nil |
| Crowd net promoter score | 22 | 33 |
Figures from Appen’s FY25 annual report, directors’ report signed February 25, 2026. Its half-year 2026 results reported group revenue up 17 percent, with Appen China up 80 percent and Appen Global down 27 percent with a $4.5m underlying EBITDA loss.
The crowd net promoter score is the line that should interest a contributor most, because Appen explains it in its own words: the fall from 33 to 22 was “primarily due to project availability and earnings stability during certain periods of the year. This reflects the importance that contributors place on having a steady, reliable source of income.” It goes on to concede “there is still room to make improvements on managing contributor allocation to projects.” That is a company telling you, in an audited document, that its contributors do not get steady work.
How to apply to Appen in 2026
- Go to crowdgen.com, not connect.appen.com. The old URL is dead and there is no redirect
- Create a profile at the signup app. CrowdGen lists its domain areas as code, engineering, finance, law, linguistics, medicine, research and science
- Set up your payment method inside CrowdGen. Existing Appen Connect contributors have to do this again; the platforms do not share it
- Apply to a specific project from the job feed rather than waiting to be matched. The feed is public and the dates on it are the only honest signal of what is active
- Check the rate unit before you accept. “Per valid hour” and “per completed unit” are very different offers and both appear on Appen postings in the same month
If you already hold an account, note that the contracting entity changed. The legacy Appen Connect terms name Appen Butler Hill Inc. The current CrowdGen terms name Appen AI Inc. Neither document publishes a payout threshold, a processor, a schedule or a holding period; the CrowdGen terms defer to “a Master Services Agreement executed between you and Appen”, which is not public.

Is Appen worth it in 2026?
The advice we would give a friend is the same one we give for every platform in this category. Qualify now, because review queues get slower when everyone applies in the same fortnight. Concentrate your actual working hours in one or two queues rather than twelve, because visibility in a pool is earned by consistency. And keep a running note of unpaid qualification time per vendor, with a cap. Four hours is a reasonable ceiling before a vendor has to show you real volume.

Frequently asked questions
Is Appen still hiring in 2026?
Yes. Its own job board carried 32 live contributor postings on September 24, 2026, the newest posted September 16, across 27 named countries. All 32 are independent contractor, project-based roles in the AI Trainers department. What changed is the signup route: connect.appen.com returns a 503 error and the working front door is now crowdgen.com.
Is Appen Connect shut down?
connect.appen.com returned HTTP 503 on every attempt we made on September 24, 2026, from an AWS load balancer, which is an origin failure rather than a bot block. Appen has published no notice, no status page and no redirect explaining it. Its own careers page now sends contributors to crowdgen.com instead. Whether Connect is decommissioned or simply broken is not published.
What is CrowdGen?
CrowdGen is Appen’s contributor platform, at crowdgen.com. Its signup app at app.crowdgen.com carries the page title ‘CrowdGen by Appen’ and a meta description reading ‘Contributor Experience developed by Appen Connect’. Appen’s own careers page links to it as the way to join its workforce.
Does Appen really pay $100 an hour?
CrowdGen’s homepage carries a ‘$100+/hr’ headline with an asterisk reading ‘Pay rate is based on location and skills.’ No project, country, sample or methodology is published for it. Appen’s own live postings in the same period list $0.030 per completed unit on six Latin American Spanish projects and ‘earn up to $10.5/hour’ on a Vietnamese one, as listed. Treat the headline as a ceiling, not an expectation.
How does Appen pay contributors?
Through a payout aggregator called Dots. CrowdGen names PayPal, local bank transfer, Airtm, SWIFT, Payoneer and gift card as options. Payments are processed monthly, typically by the 14th of the following month, covering the previous month’s earnings.
What is Appen’s minimum payout?
No numeric threshold is published. CrowdGen states it will hold a payment where the amount is less than the fees it would incur and pay it in a later month once the balance exceeds that fee threshold. The value of the threshold is not published.
Is Appen in financial trouble?
Appen reported a statutory net loss after tax of $21.8 million for FY25 on revenue of $233.4 million, and no dividend, in its annual report signed February 25, 2026. Its half-year results for 2026 showed group revenue up 17 percent, driven almost entirely by Appen China at plus 80 percent, while Appen Global fell 27 percent and posted a $4.5 million underlying EBITDA loss. The company is growing, and the growth is not in the Western business.
