Part time AI jobs come in three kinds: AI training and evaluation contracts, freelance gigs, and employed roles with part time hours. On 25 October 2026 the free getAIwork board held 566 training platform listings and 106 gigs, but only 4 of 1,716 titles said part time. The real difference is the weekly hours each listing asks for.

What actually counts as a part time AI job?
The US Bureau of Labor Statistics draws the line in one sentence: its Current Population Survey definitions say part time workers are those who usually work fewer than 35 hours per week. That is a useful yardstick, because almost nothing in AI work is advertised as part time in the way a supermarket shift is. Instead it arrives in three shapes.
The first is the AI training or evaluation contract: you rate chatbot answers, write prompts, check code or review ads, and you are paid by the hour or the task as an independent contractor. The second is the freelance gig, a fixed piece of work such as a paid expert interview or a short project. The third is an ordinary employed job, with a contract and a manager, that happens to be part time. The third kind is the one most people picture when they type this search, and it is by far the rarest.
How many part time AI jobs are on the getAIwork board today?
Mufy Pachorawala runs the getAIwork work board, which screens AI work listings and shows them free, with no signup. Every one of its 36 pages was read on 25 October 2026, 1,716 listings in all, the same total the board’s public stats page reported for 24 October. Each listing carries a type, so the three kinds above can be counted directly.
| Kind of listing, getAIwork board, 25 October 2026 | Listings | Remote | Hourly pay shown, as listed |
|---|---|---|---|
| AI training platform contracts | 566 | 429 | 476 |
| Freelance gigs | 106 | 48 | 32 |
| Employer jobs | 1,044 | 90 | 14 |
| Titles that say part time or flexible hours | 4 | 1 | 1 |
Two things stand out. The board files its 1,044 employer listings under a type labelled part time or junior role, but that bucket is a catch all: 88 of them show a yearly salary and only a handful are part time in any sense. Read the label as “not a platform contract”, not as a promise of short hours. And the word part time almost never reaches a job title. Across 1,716 titles it appeared, with flexible hours, exactly four times, one of them an Innodata annotator role listed at USD 15 an hour in the United States. Job titles mislead in the same way elsewhere, as our breakdown of the three jobs behind AI analyst listings shows.
So the honest answer to how many part time AI jobs exist is that the hours live inside the listing, not in its headline. The 566 platform contracts are where nearly all of the flexible work sits, and 429 of them are open to remote applicants. The rest of this page opens those listings to see what they ask for.

How many hours a week do part time AI listings ask for?
Three platforms account for most of the board’s flexible work, so 30 Mercor listings and 30 micro1 listings were picked at random and opened at the source on 25 October 2026, and Welo Data’s whole public board was read through its Lever feed. Two more platforms publish their rule in an FAQ instead of in each listing.
| Source, read 25 October 2026 | What the listings say about hours | Lowest stated |
|---|---|---|
| Welo Data Ads Quality Rater | 29 of 38 postings state a minimum commitment of 5 hours a week, up to 20 | 5 hours |
| micro1, 30 listings sampled | All 30 tag their hours as Flexible; 8 state a commitment, from 5 to 10 up to 20 to 30 hours | 5 hours |
| Mercor, 30 listings sampled | 15 say part time; 13 state weekly hours, and 4 of those ask for 40 | 10 hours |
| DataAnnotation FAQ | No minimum hours or daily login requirements | None |
| Outlier FAQ | No minimum hour requirements, schedule completely flexible | None |
The spread is wider than the word flexible suggests. At the low end, the Welo Data Tamil (India) rater posting says the minimum commitment is 5 hours per week, with up to 20 allowed, and lists pay as approximately $3 per hour, based on tasks. A micro1 usability tester listing asks for 5 to 10 hours a week, while a micro1 Telugu transcription listing wants a minimum of 20, at $10 to $24 an hour as listed.

Mercor is the surprise. Half of the sampled listings use the phrase part time, and a mathematical physicist listing asks for 10 hours a week at $80 to $110 an hour as listed. Yet several Mercor talent network listings, such as the lawyer talent network, describe commitments of 15 to 30 hours, and a senior counsel listing asks you to commit reliably to 40 hours a week, which is full time by any definition, BLS included. An hourly contract is not automatically a part time one. Every rate here is as listed on 25 October 2026; rates change and none of them guarantees any amount of work.
If you are new to all of this and want a shortlist that fits a few hours a week, the two minute match quiz sorts the platform kinds by background before you open a single listing.
Before you apply: what to find in a part time AI listing
Each line is something the listings on this page state in plain text. Tick it off once you have found it in the listing you are reading.
This checks a listing’s wording only. It says nothing about how much work you will get.
What do people who work these hours actually report?
Listings describe the hours a platform wants. Workers describe the hours they get, which is a different number. Two r/DataAnnotationTech threads and one r/outlier_ai comment were read for this page, 34 accounts in all, posted between January and July 2026. They are what people report, not evidence of what any platform offers.
In a February 2026 thread asking how many hours is responsible, 25 replies ranged from one to three hours a day to rare twelve hour days. Most settled on four to six hours with breaks, and several said quality slips past that, which they worried would cost them future work. One parent described splitting the day into three blocks of two to three hours around school runs. One person who worked 12 hours two days running did so after a two week drought with nothing on their dashboard.
That drought is the other half of the story. In a July 2026 thread about daily hours, a student said they aimed for two to four hours a day but that it was up to the platform to supply the work, and one reply said they had had no work since the end of April after doing 20 to 30 hours a week on top of a full time job. In January 2026 an Outlier contributor with a regular job said the work had suited them only while projects appeared at hours they could actually take.
Where the accounts agree with the FAQs: nobody is clocking in, and short days are normal. Where they part company: no minimum hours also means no minimum work. A platform that lets you work as little as you like can also give you nothing at all, and the people who treat it as a fixed part time income are the ones posting about dry months.

Which kind of part time AI work fits which background?
The board’s stats page splits listed hourly pay by background, from the listings that state a figure. These are medians of listed rates on 24 October 2026, not what anyone is paid, and they move every week.
| Background | Kind that usually fits | Typical stated hours | Median listed hourly pay, board, 24 Oct 2026 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Second language | Ads rating, transcription, translation checks | 5 to 20 a week | $33 (Language, 102 listings) |
| Strong writer or generalist | Chatbot rating and prompt writing contracts | No minimum to 20 a week | $70 (Generalist and writing, 220 listings) |
| Developer | Code evaluation contracts, some part time engineering roles | 10 to 40 a week | $84 (Coding and software, 386 listings) |
| STEM degree | Expert evaluation contracts | 10 to 30 a week | $90 (STEM, 175 listings) |
| Licensed professional | Domain expert contracts in law, medicine, finance | 10 to 40 a week | $130 (Licensed profession, 192 listings) |
The pattern is simple. The fewer credentials a listing asks for, the lower the stated hours tend to be. Expert contracts state more hours and more pay, and they are also the ones most likely to quietly mean 40 hours. If you have no experience at all, our guide to AI training jobs that take beginners goes platform by platform, and the ads quality rater review covers the lowest hour role on this page in detail.
Comparing the two big no minimum platforms side by side? The Outlier versus DataAnnotation comparison sets their onboarding and payout terms next to each other, and Mercor versus micro1 does the same for the two platforms whose listings state hours most often.
Do you have to pay to see part time AI listings?
No, though one well known site would prefer you did. The FlexJobs FAQ says a paid subscription is needed to see employer names, read full job details and apply. It is a legitimate business model, and some people find the screening worth it. But every listing on this page was read for free, at the source, and the hours were sitting in plain text in each posting.
The pitch to be wary of is the course selling a certificate no platform asks for, or the messaging app recruiter hiring for a famous lab. Real platforms do not charge you to apply.
The getAIwork board stays free and public, no signup, with pay shown only as each source posts it. If you would rather be pointed at the kinds of work that suit your background first, take the match quiz and then use the board to read the listings yourself.
Frequently asked questions
How many hours is part time for AI work?
There is no industry rule. The US Bureau of Labor Statistics counts fewer than 35 usual hours a week as part time. AI platform listings read on 25 October 2026 stated anything from no minimum to 40 hours a week.
Which AI platforms have no minimum hours?
DataAnnotation’s FAQ says there are no minimum hours or daily login requirements, and Outlier’s FAQ says there are no minimum hour requirements. Neither promises that work will be available when you log in.
Can I do part time AI work from India?
Some listings accept India based applicants. On 25 October 2026 Welo Data listed Ads Quality Rater roles for Bengali, Tamil, Telugu and Urdu in India, each stating a 5 hour weekly minimum.
Are part time AI jobs employee jobs or contracts?
Almost all are independent contractor work. Of 1,716 getAIwork board listings on 25 October 2026, 672 were platform contracts or gigs, and only 4 titles said part time or flexible hours.
Do part time AI jobs need a degree?
Not all. Ads rating and transcription listings ask for language fluency rather than a degree, while expert evaluation contracts on Mercor and micro1 usually name a degree, licence or years in the field.
Why do some hourly AI contracts ask for 40 hours a week?
Some projects need steady throughput. In a sample of 30 Mercor listings read on 25 October 2026, 4 asked for 40 hours a week, so an hourly contract is not automatically part time.
