Uber AI Jobs: The Contractor Gigs and the Engineering Roles

A man checks his phone in a parked car at dusk, thinking about uber ai jobs.

Uber AI jobs come in two very different halves. On 30 October 2026 Uber’s own careers board listed 42 AI titled roles out of 763, and 31 were engineering. The other half is Uber AI Solutions, a contractor marketplace whose freelance evaluation and annotation listings sit on Handshake, with pay as listed and mixed payment reports.

Listen to this article, about 13 minutes. A synthetic voice reads the article and announces each section title as it begins; tables are read row by row and the questions at the end are left out.

A play button sits beside every section heading, and once you scroll past this player a bar at the bottom of the screen keeps the controls in reach. Tap or click any sentence to hear the reading start from there.

On this page: a full count of Uber’s own careers board on 30 October 2026, the pay five US postings list, the Uber AI Solutions contractor listings with pay as printed, and what contractors report about getting paid.

Think you already know this? Five questions, one minute.

Every answer is on this page. Answer from what you know now; the page fills in the rest.

  1. 1. What is a person doing contract tasks for Uber AI Solutions?

  2. 2. How many AI titled roles did jobs.uber.com list on 30 October 2026?

  3. 3. What does the Freelance Legal Expert AI Evaluator listing ask contractors to produce?

  4. 4. How do drivers get digital tasks during Uber’s pilot?

  5. 5. What share of customer service jobs did Uber cut in July 2026, as reported?

What are Uber AI jobs, exactly?

Search for Uber AI jobs and you get two companies wearing one logo. The first is Uber the employer, hiring salaried machine learning engineers to price rides, match drivers and work with robotaxi partners. The second is Uber AI Solutions, a business that sells training data to other AI companies and finds the people to make it. Uber’s own page for it claims “over 10 million contributors” as of March 2026.

Those contributors are not Uber employees. Uber’s page for them offers “flexible online opportunities” in five kinds of work: evaluating AI responses, translating and reviewing content, testing products, collecting data samples, and labelling data. The two halves have different front doors, different contracts and very different pay sentences, so it helps to see them side by side.

How many AI roles does Uber’s own careers board list?

Fewer than the headlines suggest. We read the whole feed behind jobs.uber.com on 30 October 2026: 763 open postings worldwide, 461 of them posted in October. Only 42 carry AI, ML, machine learning, GenAI, agentic or autonomous in the title, and 39 of those are in the United States.

Only two of the 42 belong to Uber AI Solutions itself, and both are senior engineers. Nothing on the board hires annotators or AI trainers as staff. Here is the pay five US postings listed on 30 October 2026, as listed. Each says base salary is only part of pay and depends on location, and none of it is a promise.

The entry bar is high. The staff engineer posting asks for five years of production ML systems; the senior staff one asks for a master’s or PhD and seven years. The business development role is the gentlest door, and even it wants three years in banking, consulting or corporate development.

What does Uber AI Solutions ask contractors to do?

This is where most readers searching the phrase actually belong. On 30 October 2026 we could read 20 Uber AI Solutions freelance listings as public Handshake previews. Handshake prints no posting date on a preview, so we cannot say which still take applicants, only what they said. Nine wanted domain experts (legal, healthcare, finance, marketing, business operations, technical writing), four were generalist or prompt writing work, four were writing and content, and three were language roles.

The Freelance Legal Expert AI Evaluator preview describes the job well: write hard prompts from real statutes and contracts, find where the model breaks, then build a gradable rubric and a “golden” answer. Most previews say remote, 1099 independent contractor, and United States based. Pay appears in eight of the 20, and this is how each printed it.

Freelance Healthcare Expert$80 to $130 / hourRemote, US

Read the wording, not just the numbers. “Earning potential”, “averaging” and “up to” describe a ceiling or an average across tasks, not an hourly wage anyone is owed. Rates change by project and nothing here is guaranteed. If you want to see which of these lanes fits your background before you spend an evening on an assessment, the free AI trainer match quiz sorts that out in about a minute.

Can Uber drivers do AI tasks in the app?

Some can, in a pilot. Uber’s digital tasks post, dated 21 April 2026, says select drivers and couriers in the US can complete tasks in the Driver app “no driving or delivering required”: recording themselves speaking, submitting documents in different languages, or uploading everyday photos. Each takes a few minutes, tasks appear only when clients need them, and the app shows time and earnings estimates before you start.

Uber’s Only on Uber 2025 newsroom post says these tasks are “powered by Uber’s AI Solutions Group” and were tested in India first. So this is the same business, reached through a different door. It is invitation only: if digital tasks are not in your Work Hub, there is no form that puts them there.

What do contractors report about Uber AI Solutions pay?

Mixed, and loud. We read four forum threads from December 2025 to October 2026, about 35 posts and replies. What follows is what people report. These are allegations on a public forum, not findings, and we found no court or regulator record on them during this research.

The most shared account, from a May 2026 thread, came from a multilingual annotator on a video evaluation project. They said the per task rate was cut twice mid project, from $6.25 to $4.12 to $2.08, and that 313 tasks over 12 hours paid $13.10 in total. That is their account, not a rate we verified. On 27 May they edited the post to say the matter was resolved.

In a second May 2026 thread, a contractor in Europe said more than 2,700 euros had been held since February. By 30 June they reported the money was paid after they sent a final notice before legal action. A July 2026 reply in the first thread said 12 audio recording tasks were paid as one.

A quieter complaint is an empty queue. In a thread that ran from December 2025 to April 2026, several new sign ups said the task hub showed nothing after onboarding. One who got through in February reported a single $8 task by late April, plus unpaid time on qualification work. Another, with the platform since 2024, said the work was never steady but did not report missing pay. And in a September 2026 thread, someone offered a specialist role after a video interview asked whether that was normal; the replies were second hand warnings, not accounts of their own.

Where the forum and Uber agree: tasks depend on client demand, which is exactly what Uber’s own digital tasks post says. Where they disagree is how reliably the pay arrives. Two of the loudest complaints later reported being paid, which is worth knowing before you either panic or sign up. Keep your own record of every task you submit.

Why is Uber hiring AI engineers while cutting support jobs?

Because the two are the same plan seen from different desks. Bloomberg Law reported on 24 July 2026 that Uber cut 10% of its customer service jobs to “embrace” AI. The same Bloomberg report says the cuts, announced on 22 July, fell on the community operations team, that Uber has about 34,000 employees worldwide, and that it was still recruiting for more than 500 roles.

On 30 October 2026 the board held 763. The new postings lean to engineering and to autonomous vehicles, five of the 31 engineering roles sit in AV Labs, while the work that left was support. Those are rarely the same people, which is why a layoff headline and a hiring page can both be true on one morning.

How do you apply for Uber AI work without getting fooled?

For a salaried role, apply only through jobs.uber.com, where every posting has its own ID. For contractor work, start from Uber’s own earn page or a listing that names Uber AI Solutions on Handshake. A Telegram or WhatsApp recruiter “hiring for Uber AI” who asks for a registration fee is not Uber, whatever logo is on the message. Nothing we read from Uber asked for a fee.

Salaried Uber roles are listed on jobs.uber.com, and none we read asked applicants for a fee.

One honest data point from our side: the free getAIwork board, which screens AI work listings and needs no signup, had 1,731 live listings when we crawled it on 30 October 2026, and none was posted under an Uber name. If you want the wider field, our Handshake AI review covers the platform those previews sit on, the payout thresholds page explains when contractor money actually moves, and the Amazon count shows the same engineering heavy shape at another giant.

If you would rather compare several contractor platforms than bet an evening on one, the platform comparison quiz gives you a shortlist that fits your background.

Which half of Uber AI jobs fits your situation?

Pick the line closest to you. Each answer restates what the postings in this article ask for, and says nothing about earnings.

Nothing here predicts pay or acceptance. Uber’s own pages and listings are the final word.

Frequently asked questions

Does Uber hire AI trainers as employees?

Not on its careers board. On 30 October 2026 none of the 42 AI titled roles on jobs.uber.com was an annotator or trainer role; that work runs through Uber AI Solutions as contractor tasks.

Is Uber AI Solutions the same as Scaled Solutions?

Yes. Uber’s client portal for the business still sits at a scaledsolutions address, and one Handshake listing calls the work platform by that name.

Are Uber AI Solutions tasks remote?

Yes. Every Handshake preview we read on 30 October 2026 described remote work, and most said United States based applicants only.

Do you need a degree for Uber AI Solutions work?

Not for every listing. Generalist tasks asked for strong writing and judgement, while the expert evaluator listings asked for credentials such as an MD, a JD or finance experience.

How do Uber drivers get digital tasks?

Only by invitation during the pilot. Uber says eligible drivers see the option in their Work Hub and opt in there.

Is Uber still hiring after the support job cuts?

Yes. Uber’s careers board listed 763 open postings on 30 October 2026, and 461 of them were posted in October.
