Google DeepMind jobs are posted on Google Careers, which listed 98 open DeepMind roles on October 9, 2026. Research scientists were the largest group at 25, yet only one posting demanded a PhD with no alternative, and 22 others accepted equivalent practical experience instead. Every posting quoted a US base salary range, the lowest starting at $123,000 as listed.

How many Google DeepMind jobs are open, and what kind?
DeepMind no longer runs a job board of its own. The “View open roles” button on DeepMind’s careers page sends you to Google Careers, filtered to DeepMind, and that filter is the record.
We read every DeepMind posting on Google Careers on October 9, 2026 and counted 98. Google does not label a job family, so we sorted them by title. Here is how they fall.
| Job family, sorted by title | Open roles | Example posting |
|---|---|---|
| Research scientist (including chemist and biologist roles) | 25 | Research Scientist, AI Secure Code |
| Product and program management | 22 | Technical Program Manager, Data Collection and Model Evaluation |
| Research engineer | 21 | Research Software Engineer |
| Software, data and design | 19 | Senior Software Engineer, Mobile, Gemini App |
| Hardware, robotics and lab | 8 | Robotics Engineer, Health and Calibration |
| Legal and writing | 3 | Technical Writer, DeepMind Institute |
| Total | 98 | Google Careers, read October 9, 2026 |
Two things stand out. Research is only about half the list: 46 of the 98 are research scientist or research engineer roles, and the rest run programs, ship the Gemini app, build robots and chips, or write. And almost everything is a full time staff role. Only two postings are contracts, both technical program manager roles in Mountain View, one of them running data collection and model evaluation. That is the closest DeepMind’s own list gets to the data work most readers of this site are looking for, and it asks for five years of program management.

Do Google DeepMind jobs require a PhD?
Mostly no, on paper. The DeepMind careers page says research scientists “normally hold a PhD”, and the postings agree that the research scientist family is where the PhD lives: 22 of the 25 name one in their minimum qualifications. But read the full line. On 21 of those 22, the requirement is a PhD “or equivalent practical experience”, which is how the AI Secure Code posting words it.
Across all 98 postings, exactly one asks for a PhD with no alternative. The Research Scientist, Human-AI Interaction role wants a PhD in computer science, human centered computing, cognitive science or a related field, plus six years of research after it. Of the 21 research engineer postings, one mentions a PhD at all, and that one also accepts equivalent experience. Two program manager roles mention a PhD only as a way to need fewer years of experience. The safety roles follow the same pattern: our count of AI safety jobs across four boards on 19 October 2026 found no safety titled posting at DeepMind, Anthropic or OpenAI that demands a PhD with no alternative.
Everywhere else the floor is lower. 68 of the 98 postings open their minimum qualifications with a bachelor’s degree or equivalent practical experience, every one of them with that “or equivalent” clause. The harder filter is years: five and eight were the most common experience requirements, on 24 postings each.

Where are DeepMind jobs based, and is there anything in India?
Counting every location a posting names, 73 of the 98 can be done somewhere in the United States, mostly Mountain View, New York, San Francisco and Cambridge, Massachusetts. 25 can be done in the United Kingdom, nearly all in London, and the rest are spread thinly: four in Zurich, two each in Singapore, Tokyo and Bengaluru, and one each in Montreal and Paris.
India had two DeepMind postings on October 9, 2026, both in Bengaluru and both senior: a Staff Software Engineer for Gemini app growth asking for eight years of software development, and a Research Scientist on the Agents team asking for a PhD or equivalent experience, eight years with machine learning frameworks and a publication record. If you are in India and neither fits, the guide to AI jobs for freshers covers what our board finds there at entry level.
Remote work is close to absent. Only one of the 98 postings carried Google’s remote eligible tag, and it was the Human-AI Interaction research scientist role, the same one that demands a PhD outright. Every other posting names an office.

What do DeepMind roles pay, as listed?
Every one of the 98 postings printed a pay line, and every one of them quoted a US base salary range in US dollars, followed by a bonus target of 15, 20 or 25 percent, equity and benefits. That includes the 25 postings with no US location at all: a London or Bengaluru posting showed the US range and nothing local. Read them as hiring ranges for US roles, not what anyone is paid.
| Job family | Lowest range as listed | Highest range as listed |
|---|---|---|
| Hardware, robotics and lab | $123,000 to $174,000 | $236,000 to $329,000 |
| Research engineer | $147,000 to $210,000 | $236,000 to $329,000 |
| Research scientist | $147,000 to $210,000 | $262,000 to $364,000 |
| Software, data and design | $147,000 to $210,000 | up to $364,000 |
| Product and program management | $163,000 to $236,000 | up to $333,000 |
| Legal and writing | $236,000 to $329,000 | up to $351,000 |
For context, our own board’s data, updated October 8, 2026, puts the median listed annual pay across 404 coding and software listings at $175,000, and across 188 STEM listings at $174,720. DeepMind’s lowest research ranges start a little under that and run well past it. All of these are listed figures for specific postings; rates change and nothing here is guaranteed. The highest paying AI jobs page sets these ranges beside other labs.
If you are weighing a role like these against contract AI work you could start sooner, the two minute match quiz sorts the options by what you have already done.
What do people who applied without a PhD report?
The postings say what is allowed, not what gets people hired. The most detailed public answers we found were two r/MachineLearning threads from 2026, read in full on October 9: about 25 substantive comments between them. These are what commenters report, not findings, and none of them can be checked.
The pessimistic side was louder. In a March 2026 thread from a math and physics graduate asking about a research engineer opening, the top replies said the odds without a PhD or papers were close to nothing, and one PhD holder said they knew first authors with heavily cited papers who could not get an interview for an internship. One commenter, an ML engineer at a large tech company, said they applied to a research engineer role asking for a bachelor’s and a few years of experience and were rejected within days of the closing date.
The same thread also cut the other way. One commenter said a friend got an interview with no PhD, no papers and two years of work, because the background matched the team. Another said they had met research engineers at DeepMind who never finished an undergraduate degree. In a January 2026 thread, an Amazon applied scientist without a PhD was told by the top reply to aim for research engineer rather than scientist, and to build a relationship with recruiters; that commenter said all their own DeepMind interviews came through recruiters but that friends who applied cold had received offers.
Where the accounts and the postings agree: the PhD is a soft line, the equivalent experience clause is real, and the research scientist title is the hardest door. Where they differ is the bar. The postings list years and skills; the commenters describe a bar of publications, referrals and an exact fit with one team’s work, none of which a posting can promise.
Which DeepMind route fits which background?
The families barely overlap, so the honest answer depends on what you already have. This table restates what the postings asked for on October 9, 2026.
| Your background | Family that fits | What the postings ask for |
|---|---|---|
| Researcher with a PhD and a publication record | Research scientist | PhD or equivalent experience, papers at named ML venues |
| Strong engineer, no PhD | Research engineer | Bachelor’s or equivalent, often five years or more of ML or software work |
| Product or program manager | Product and program management | Bachelor’s or equivalent, usually five years or more of program work |
| Hardware, robotics or lab operations | Hardware, robotics and lab | Bachelor’s or equivalent and hands on experience |
| Writer, editor or lawyer | Legal and writing | 10 to 14 years for the writing roles, seven for counsel |
| Student | Student Researcher Program | Enrolled in a bachelor’s, master’s or PhD program |
| No degree, no AI experience | Not DeepMind’s own list today | Contract rating and data work is a different market |
Students have one more door. DeepMind’s Student Researcher Program offers paid internships of 12 to 24 weeks, in person, for anyone enrolled in a bachelor’s, master’s or PhD program, and applying puts you in front of other Google AI teams too.
If the last row describes you, the contract world is where most entry routes into AI work sit. The AI rater jobs guide and the RLHF jobs explainer cover the contractors that hire raters and trainers, while the Anthropic jobs breakdown and the OpenAI careers guide show the same split between salaried lab roles and contract data work at two other labs.
What does each DeepMind job family ask for?
Pick a family to see the minimum qualifications its postings stated on October 9, 2026. This restates the article’s tables; it does not estimate pay or your chances.
Postings change daily; read the live one on Google Careers before you apply. Nobody real will ask you for money to apply.
How do you spot a fake DeepMind job offer?
Every real DeepMind role on October 9, 2026 sat on Google Careers. So the first check on any offer is simple: find the same title there. If it is not on the list, treat it as unverified. The Telegram recruiter hiring for DeepMind, OpenAI and three banks in the same week is not working from that list.
Google’s November 2025 fraud and scams advisory says job scams are rising, that fraudsters pose as well known companies with fake career pages and recruiter profiles, and that a legitimate company will never require upfront payments or training fees to secure a job. Put plainly, a request for money is the end of the conversation, whoever claims to be hiring.
Before you apply anywhere, the match quiz is a quick way to see whether a salaried lab role or contract AI work suits your background now, and our work board is free and public, with no signup, listing contract AI work by country every day.
Frequently asked questions
Does Google DeepMind have its own job board?
