Surge AI careers run through three doors, and only one is a salaried job. On October 3, 2026, Surge’s own Ashby board listed 28 full time roles, all United States remote, with no pay shown on any of them. Paid contract work sits in its Consultant Program, listed from $55 an hour, and on DataAnnotation.

What does Surge AI’s own job board list today?
Most pages ranking for “Surge AI careers” are aggregator copies of the same listings, some of them weeks stale. We read the source instead: Surge’s own job board on Ashby, through the board’s public posting feed, on October 3, 2026. It returned 28 open requisitions. Every one is full time, every one is marked United States remote, and not one displays a salary band. Ashby has a setting for showing compensation on a posting, and Surge has it switched off on all 28.
Grouped by the department Surge itself assigns, the board looks like this.
| Department, as Surge labels it | Open roles | Example titles on the board |
|---|---|---|
| Field Engineering & Operations | 15 | Human Data Architect, RL Environments Architect, AI Programs Analyst, Finance Domain, Lead Adversarial Engineer |
| Platform Engineering & Infrastructure | 3 | Staff Fullstack Engineer, Staff Product Engineer, Software Engineer, Security |
| Research & Data Science | 3 | Research Scientist, Forward Deployed Researcher, Data Scientist |
| Marketing | 2 | Senior Growth Lead, Senior Growth & Lifecycle Marketing Lead |
| Account Management, Business Development & Partnerships | 2 | Business Development Manager, Strategic Partnerships Manager |
| Corporate Operations | 2 | Recruiter, Sourcer |
| Corporate Finance & Accounting | 1 | Controller |
Field Engineering & Operations is more than half the board, 15 of 28, and it is where the work that makes Surge a data company actually lives: people who design training data, run expert programmes for customers, and build the reinforcement learning environments models are tested in. The finance domain analyst posting asks for two to five years in investment banking, equity research, audit or similar, which tells you the kind of background these delivery roles want. This is not an entry level board.
Twenty three of the 28 carry the same publish date, July 13, 2026, which looks like a bulk repost rather than 23 roles opening on one Monday. The genuinely new ones are a Data Scientist, a Recruiter and a Sourcer, all posted September 30, a Software Engineer, Security on September 16, and a Controller on August 31. Two recruiting roles posted on one day is a reasonable sign Surge expects to keep hiring, though it has not said so.
One more detail from the postings themselves. The security role says Surge is based in San Francisco and New York and would like you there, but will take remote for a strong fit with some travel. So “remote” on this board means open to remote, not indifferent to location.

Why does the careers page show 59 roles and the board 28?
Open Surge’s careers page on the same day and you count 59 titles, more than twice the board. We matched them one by one. 22 titles appear in both places. Six are on the Ashby board only, including the Recruiter, the Sourcer and the Controller, which suggests the board is updated first. The other 37 are on the careers page only.
Those 37 split into two kinds. Seven are not jobs in the usual sense at all: four part time consultant programmes (accounting, finance, healthcare and legal), two residency tracks, and the Surge AI Research Fellowship. The remaining 30 are ordinary salaried titles, such as Backend Engineer, Creative Director and three Executive Assistant roles in New York, San Francisco and Seattle, that have no live requisition on the board today. Our reading is that some of those are older pages that were never taken down. That is an inference, not something Surge has said, so treat any careers page title missing from the board as unconfirmed until you see it on Ashby.
The practical rule is simple. For a salaried job, apply through the Ashby board. For contract work, the careers page and the consultant pages are the real door, because none of that work appears on Ashby. Snorkel AI splits the same way, with salaried roles on Greenhouse and a separate Expert Contributor portal, as our breakdown of Snorkel AI careers and its expert route shows. If you are not sure which of the two you are actually suited for, the free two minute match quiz sorts AI work by background before you spend an hour on an application.

What do Surge AI roles and programs pay, as listed?
Nothing, as far as the salaried board admits. None of the 28 postings shows a figure, so anyone quoting a Surge salary is quoting a third party estimate, not Surge. The contract side is the opposite: Surge publishes rates there, and they are the only pay numbers on its site. Every figure below is as listed on the page named, read October 3, 2026. Rates change, they are starting points rather than offers, and nothing in them is guaranteed.
| Route | Rate as listed | Commitment as listed | Source, read Oct 3, 2026 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Consultant Program: finance, accounting, healthcare ops, coding | From $60 an hour, plus $100 for completing the assessment and $100 more if you pass | 10 to 20 or more hours a week, flexible | Surge Consultant Network |
| Legal Consultant | From $55 an hour | 20 hours a week for 3 months | Legal Consultant posting |
| Elite tier: award winning author or journalist | $200 to $400 an hour, contractor | Not stated | Surge workforce page |
| DataAnnotation finance expert | $40 to $125 or more an hour, by task difficulty | Not stated | DataAnnotation finance page |
| Research Fellowship | Hourly, no figure given | Alongside existing academic work | Fellowship page |
| Salaried roles on Ashby (28) | Not shown on any posting | Full time | Surge Ashby board |
Two things stand out. First, this is the rare AI work programme that pays you to apply rather than the other way round: the Consultant Network page lists $100 for submitting an assessment and a further $100 if you are accepted. Keep that in mind for the last section, because it is the exact reverse of how the fakes work. Second, the consultant page says applications and projects are managed through DataAnnotation, which is Surge’s own work platform. Our Surge AI review sets out the legal link between the two brands in full.
For context, the licensed profession listings on the free getAIwork board carried a median listed rate of $130 an hour across 152 listings on October 2, 2026, from the board’s own published stats file. That is a figure for what listings say, across many platforms, not a prediction of what any one person is paid.
Which Surge route fits which background?
Surge runs six routes, and they want very different people. Picking the wrong one is the commonest way to hear nothing back.
| Route | Who it is for | How you apply |
|---|---|---|
| Salaried role on Ashby | Experienced engineers, researchers, operators and finance people | Apply on the Ashby posting |
| Consultant Program | Working professionals in finance, accounting, healthcare operations or coding | Sign up through the domain link on the Consultant Network page, then take the assessment on DataAnnotation |
| Legal Consultant | Lawyers with 5 to 10 years of experience | Email careers@surgehq.ai, then complete a short task |
| Elite tier | Named senior roles such as author, professor, VC partner, banker | Email talent@surgehq.ai with the role name |
| Research Fellowship | PhD level experts, STEM first | Email researchfellows@surgehq.ai with a CV |
| DataAnnotation general work | Generalists and specialists without a credential route | Sign up and take the one attempt Starter Assessment |
If you have no degree and no professional credential, the honest answer is that only the last row is realistically open, and it opens through a single unpaid assessment you get one go at. Our guide to passing the DataAnnotation Starter Assessment covers what it tests, and the DataAnnotation review covers what happens after. If you want to see how Surge compares with a rival’s doors, Scale AI careers has the same split between a corporate board and a contributor platform.
A side note on the elite tier. It is real, it lists exactly one rate, and it is not a shortcut. A journalist whose bylines are in the publications the page names does not need this article. Everyone else should read it as a description of who Surge wants, not an invitation.
How do you tell a real Surge listing from a fake one?
Surge is popular enough to be impersonated, and the pattern is familiar: a message on WhatsApp or Telegram from a “Surge recruiter” offering remote evaluation work at a generous rate, which soon needs a fee, a deposit or a crypto payment to “unlock” tasks. It is the same recruiter who was hiring for OpenAI last month. The FTC’s April 30, 2026 alert describes the same scheme, down to the “online assessor” job title, and its rule is blunt: never pay to get paid.

Everything genuine we found on October 3 points back to a short list of addresses. Salaried roles live at jobs.ashbyhq.com/surge-ai. Contract programmes are described on surgehq.ai and run on DataAnnotation. Every contact address Surge publishes ends in @surgehq.ai: careers@, talent@ and researchfellows@. Surge’s Consultant Program pays you for its assessment, and no Surge route we found charges you anything; a fake one asks you to pay. If a message reaches you any other way, report it at ReportFraud.ftc.gov and do not reply.
We have not verified any specific impersonation domain or account against a public record, so we are not naming one. The checklist on this page works on any of them.
Before you apply anywhere, it is worth seeing what else is open this week. The getAIwork work board is free and public, listed 1,736 live listings on October 2, 2026, 563 of them on AI training platforms, and screens each one before it goes up. The match quiz narrows that list to your own background in two minutes. For the other big labs, see OpenAI careers and Anthropic jobs.
Is this Surge listing real?
Tick each one that is true of the message or listing in front of you. Nothing here is saved or sent anywhere.
If any box stays empty, stop and check the listing on Surge’s own pages before replying. Report fakes at reportfraud.ftc.gov.
Frequently asked questions
Is Surge AI hiring right now?
Yes. Its Ashby board listed 28 full time roles on October 3, 2026, with three posted on September 30. The contract programmes on its careers page also take applications on a rolling basis.
Does Surge AI hire outside the United States?
Every one of the 28 salaried postings read on October 3, 2026 was marked United States remote. The consultant and fellowship pages do not state a country restriction, so check the terms when you sign up.
Is the Surge AI Consultant Program a job?
It is contract work, not employment. The page describes flexible hours, managed through DataAnnotation, with rates listed from $60 an hour as of October 3, 2026, and those rates can change.
Do I have to pay anything to apply to Surge?
No. Surge lists a $100 payment to you for completing the consultant assessment. Any request for a fee, deposit or crypto payment from you is the classic sign of a scam.
Why do some Surge reviews describe a different company?
Several unrelated companies share the Surge name, and their employee reviews often turn up in searches for Surge AI. Check that a review names Surge AI specifically before you weigh it.
Is Surge AI the same as DataAnnotation?
Surge says on its Consultant Network page that applications and projects are managed through its platform, DataAnnotation. Our Surge AI review covers the legal relationship between the two names.
